Health Report, #1

So I’ve been to the doctor and the report is not great.  Of course, I’m okay.  Relatively healthy.  Nothing truly serious.  But basically, if I don’t start changing my diet and way of life now, that’s going to change.  It’s not like in my 20’s when I knew I wasn’t eating right or exercising or doing what I’m supposed to.  My metabolism was high and every time I needed to lose weight it was easy to spend a few weeks at the gym and results were pretty quick.  In my 30’s it was harder to lose weight and my metabolism slowly decreased.  I stayed pretty even though towards the latter half until recently.  Suddenly, despite going to yoga pretty regularly and not changing my diet I gained 15 pounds in less than 6 months.

Goodbye 30’s.  Hello 40’s.

I believe something is going on inside that contributed to the weight gain.  The only thing that came out of my recent doctor visits was high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and fibroids.  I’ve never had high cholesterol or high blood pressure.  I could have had fibroids but without doing a pelvic ultrasound, I would not have known I had them.  Anyway, I don’t want to take meds so I’m going to take the next three months and drastically change my way of living.  Hopefully, my cholesterol and blood pressure go down.  The docs didn’t give me any suggestions as to how to get rid of fibroids.  I’ve got a small one at 2cm inside my uterus and clusters around both my ovaries.  Apparently all too small to do anything with.  I’m not sure if a change of diet will get rid of them but I have a feeling that a change of diet will help prevent more but not get rid of what I’ve got.  I don’t know but I’m sure eating better and exercising more will not hurt the fibroids.

So I’m still continuing my path to regularly attend yoga 5 x per week.  Right now I’m consistently going 2x and I’m working towards getting it to 3x per week.  I’ve also started walking around the neighborhood before heading to work every day.  That’s help with my step count.  My original daily step goal was 7,000 (I know it’s not a lot but I sit at my desk all day!).  I’ve recently increased that to 8,000 and I will want to increase that as I get accustomed to each mini milestone.  I feel like I should be doing more but I don’t know where I’ll find the time to add more.  One step at a time.

So I’m going to start on the Paleo and NO SUGAR diet (because in addition to everything else, I’m Pre-Diabetic!).  🙁

Wish me luck!  I’ll let you know how it goes!

  1. Good luck! I totally agree with setting smaller measureable goals and working in increments. I also set an 8000 step goal for office days and a 10000 one for the weekend when I have a little more time 🙂 Good luck! I really hope your body responds 🙂

  2. Me, too, but I have 25 years on you! Definitely do the exercise. I walked 3-5 miles a day and lost 30 pounds. It DOES help! It’s so easy to grab snacks that aren’t healthy because you are busy. I find the only thing I can do is not have them around at all! You will find it very hard to be absolutely NO sugar. I find that if I limit myself to no more than 10 in any meal, I do fine. If I creep above that, then I begin to have problems. Even milk has SOME sugar. Sometimes I just changed the size of something. For instance, I love to start my day with OJ and it’s good for cholesterol, but I have a 4 oz. juice glass instead of the 8 oz. serving. Spread things out over the day – 6 small meals/snacks instead of 3 big ones, for instance. Our bodies can handle a slow small intake better than a massive influx of everything.

I also watch which foods I combine. Fruits and fruit juices only by themselves, at least 30 minutes before eating something else. That way the sugar in them doesn’t turn carbs I might eat into more sugar. Carbs are important, as they provide fuel, but I eat them only with vegetables, not with meats because they will react with the fats in meat. So steak and salad instead of steak and baked potato. Maybe those things will help you, too.

    • Thanks Susan! With the hubby and kids there will unfortunately be snacks around the house. I’m going to do my best and ignore them and the best way is to have something available I can eat.

  3. Sorry you have some health worries, but glad you’re getting serious about it early. It is definitely harder the older you get! Diet is really challenging when you’re busy, and I know your family likes to go out a lot.

I did the Whole 30 in January. It’s a big change, but not that hard because the rules are so simple, and I’m still eating semi-Paleo. It good for learning if any foods give you bad reactions.

Good luck, and don’t beat yourself up when you’re not perfect. No one is!
