Last August, We arrived at Barcelona airport at 6:30am after 24 hours of flying from LAX to JFK to BCN. there was a 1.5 hour delay at JFK but made it to BCN only 30 min after our scheduled arrival. Customs and immigration was a quick pass and there was just a short wait for our bags. The private transfer picked us up and we made our way to our hotel. It was way too early to check in so we stowed our luggage and did a quick change before heading out to our first excursion with the Secret Food Tour.
The tour started 2 hours later so we leisurely walked to the meetup point, found a cafe and sat while we people watched until the meetup time. It was still very early and many shops were closed.
Highlights from the secret food tour in Barcelona –
- La Colmena – desert at a place that has been open for almost 150 years
- market in Santa Catarina and got different kinds of ham and cheese. my favorite cheese was
montbleu – catalan cheese ‘dark mountain ‘ area the cheese was created – really good, 100% goat -aged 1month - Bar Jai-ca in Barcelonetta
- Pasatapas
We had a great time with Ricardo, our guide, who did a wonderful blend of history, food and culture.
Afterwards, my friend and I were tired as we’d not had much sleep the previous 24 hours so we made our way back to the hotel to check in for real, take a shower and take a short nap before dinner. But on the way to the hotel we got sidetracked and made a few purchases.
Apparently I’m now souvenir buying shoes.

After our nap, we ventured out for dinner at Anxoita, renowned for the tapas. We over ordered as we usually do but we ate everything and enjoyed it. Suffice it to say we will definitely be going back if time allows.
After dinner we strolled through La Ramblas and enjoyed the scenery. There was a fair amount of shopping done as well.
It might be good to note that I came on this trip with the minimal amount of clothing and 2 almost empty suitcases. I don’t plan to fill it up but at least I have the space without having to buy anther suitcase.
