Tell It To The Stars, Update

Tell It To The Stars

So I fell behind.  With the move and life getting in the way I wasn’t able to do June’s clue and wasn’t able to post anything for July.  But I was able to catch up!  Whew! That was close.

So we’re half way through the year and I’m caught up with this BOM.

Next up, Moon Glow… That one is almost 3 months behind so there’s a lot I need to do for that one.

Tell It To The Stars, February Clue

Tell It To The Stars

I was able to spend a part of last Sunday working on the February clue for Tell It To The Stars.

I started with 8 Half Square Triangles (lovingly called HSTs) and I used the “no waste method” which I didn’t realize was called the “no waste method”.  This is the way I’ve always made HSTs.  I can’t remember when I first learned how to do them but this was the way I’ve always made them.  When I did Celtic Solstice with Bonnie Hunter (which I’m still working on), I learned how to do HSTs with the TriRecs ruler.  Now, if I had to do any more than 8 then I would definitely use the TriRecs ruler.  The main reason… drawing the line down the middle.  That step always just holds up the entire process for me.  Doing 8 this way is no problem but I would definitely not draw those lines for a grip load of HSTs.

Then we made flying geeses.  I didn’t know there was a “no waste method” to flying geese.  I googled it and found a few tutorials on how to do these.  I always like learning something new to see if it’s a better method than what I’ve been doing.  To be able to create 4 flying geeses at a time is a great time saver and something I hope I remember to do next time.  However mine weren’t that accurate in the end. Not a big deal but I could tell they were a smidge or two off.  I’m not sure where I went wrong but I could tell that a bunch of my points were going to get flattened.  I’m going to have to pay attention when I do them next to see where things might have gone wrong.

Tell It To The Stars, January Clue

Tell It To The Stars

This is my first time working with Hand Dyed Fabrics and I think my machine doesn’t like it.  It’s weird because it’s just the same as the other fabric just hand dyed.  I do not know why it would make a difference but I find that I have to adjust the tension.  I’m using 50W Aurifil Thread so maybe that is why?  I don’t know but it may just be my machine period.  I’m going to take it to the shop soon because my thread keeps snapping and I do not know why.  I’ve cleaned it, oiled it, changed the needle, re-threaded it, etc. and it keeps happening.  The machine is in it’s second year and it had it’s annual check up last July.  Maybe I use it so much I should be taking it in every six months?

I selected the Forest Canopy kit and received everything on Thursday. This was much faster than I anticipated since I only purchased it on Sunday or Monday.  I was happy to get it so quickly so I can get caught up with it.

I love the BlocLoc rulers!  I’ve said it before so I won’t gush over them again but they make cutting into these strips soo much easier, more precise and just a whole lot faster.

Nothing too strenuous about this piecing.  It was really cut, cut, cut, piece, piece piece and press, press, press!  The beige/white/cream of the fabric is really a light green that didn’t come through well on these pictures.

Tell It To The Stars

Tell It To The Stars

Last Month I was inundated with all of these potential new projects to start in the new year.  With all my other running projects and BOM and UFOs running in my head, I really didn’t want a new one.  I tried to resist the urge to starting a new thing and while Celtic Solstice was going on I was able to.  Now that it is done – even if I’m not, I’m drawn to the next mystery quilt on the horizon.   Judy’s Tell It To The Stars is an all year mystery quilt with a clue distributed once a month.  I have convinced myself that it is doable. 🙂

To make my life easier I purchased the hand dyed fabric kit from Vicki Welsh and received it last week.  I didn’t get purchased in time for the first step but I wouldn’t have been able to work on it if I did.  I’m working on the first step today!

I want to do this… I do.. I really do…

Tell It To The Stars

Judy at Patchwork Times is hosting a mystery quilt next year (first step comes out 1/1/14).  You can check out the full details here. I really want to participate.  And this is how one gets UFOs… If you haven’t already experienced it – I introduce you to Quilter’s ADD!

As if I wasn’t already participating in 4 BOMs right now.  Of which I’m barely able to get 2 of them completed each month.  1 of them hasn’t officially started since I haven’t received the kit yet but I am receiving 3 and only getting 2 done.  And I’m working on Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery Quilt Celtic Solstice.  And I’ve got my current WIPs… finish quilting Easy Street, piecing Missing Ivy… my hand projects – the hand quilt and Raining Cats and Dogs!  I’ve got a ton to do.  But, in the back of my head I think I can swing Tell It to the Stars too.  It’s a year long mystery quilt so I’ll have a whole month to complete each step.  I love Love LOVE Judy’s stuff so I’m sure I’ll love this too.  (sigh!)  I haven’t decided one way or the other.  The only thing holding me back right now is that I just do not have time to gather the fabric.  I really want to purchase the fabric kit just because the colors are gorgeous and it’s SO EASY to do that.  But its $200.  And I’m not ready to commit the money to it.  To make things worse, if I want the kit I have to decide by 12/10. Otherwise I may not receive the fabric in time for the 1st step.  And if I do not get the fabric by the first step – that means I’ll be behind right from the starting gate… not my favorite place to be.

Are you participating in this mystery quilt?  Are you on the fence like me?
