I don’t know if other people do it this way or even what the right way is, but I find this to be the easiest way to cut my batting, I lay the back down on my bed (or floor if it’s clean) right side down. I lay the top on top right side up (just like it would be when I put the quilt together). Then I put the batting on top and cut all around to make sure there’s several inches all around the top. Using a tape measure to measure the quilt and then cut the backing according to what I measured tends to be too cumbersome for me. So this is how I do it. And it’s done. The batting is ready for this quilt. Next week, my goal is to baste it.
And that’s it, I have no finishes and I have no purchases (or donations) or anything to add to my numbers. No ins and no outs, is great! It came close because one of my local quilt shops is having a 20% sale this weekend. It’s not the one I normally go to but is another that also supports my quilt guild so I would like to support it too. But I did a thing … I pre-ordered Tula Pink’s Curioser and Curioser line. I didn’t just pre-order it, I pre-ordered 1 yard of each fabric in the line. That’s going to be a plus 25 yards at some point when it arrives. So I didn’t go to the sale. So I guess I lied. I have a purchase but since I will not receive it until April, I’m not adding it until then. I’ve got to get this cushion finished so I can add those yards to my Used numbers and finish the orange quilt. I’ve never ordered fabric like this before so we’ll see if I like it enough to do it again or if it will be a let down. I would love to get Liberty or Tilda fabrics in much the same way but I could never bite the bullet on that one. Maybe this will be my gateway drug to that rabbit hole.

I usually lay my quilt top on the batting and cut around it, leaving a couple inches on each side. I quilt on a home machine and don’t need much extra on the sides like you do for a longarm.
Looking forward to seeing that purchase!
I measure how much I need and cut it from my big roll of batting. USUALLY that works okay!
