Hampton Ridge is done! woohoo! I’m taking 14.5 yards used this week. Thank you very much! Someone asked me recently how I determine how much is used. I struggle with this and can very from one day to the next. But to give you an idea of my calculations. Basically, I count the yardage that comes in and goes out for my own benefit so it doesn’t have to be 100% accurate. As long as I have a general idea then I’m okay with it. So here’s how I do it… I take the finish size of the quilt and calculate the area. I figure out how much area a yard is in square inches. Then I divide the total area of the quilt with the area of a yard and that gives me the yardage for one side. So I multiply it by two to get the top and bottom. Then I add how much I used for binding which is generally very easy to figure out based on how much I bought and how much I cut to use. Then I add 15% for trimmings. If the quilt has a lot of little pieces (like Celtic Solstice) I may increase that to 20%. If the piece doesn’t, then I may decrease that to 10%. But for the most part, I use 15%.
In addition to my usage, I also bought 1.5 yards for more golden/yellow borders for Missing Ivy.
