Stash Report – Week 30, 2016

For the fabric stash:  I bought fabric at Fat Quarter Shop.  I am falling in love with the fabric for Spooky Halloween and I’m shopping around for a back for it.  I don’t know when I’ll be done with it but I want to make sure I have the backing and binding when it is done.  So a bunch of half yards fell into my cart so I can audition which one I’ll like the best for my backing.  Who knows, maybe I’ll end up piecing leftover fabric together.  I’m now in the red.  I’m halfway through getting the binding on the Moon Glow so I’m hoping to get that in the used section by next week.

  • Used this week: 0 yards
  • Used year to date: 34 yards
  • Added this week: 2 yards
  • Added year to Date: 35.625 yards
  • Net ADDED for 2016: 1.625 yards

For the Budget: In addition to fabric, I bought some thread this week so I spent $47.43.  July has not been a very good month for the budget.  hopefully I can do better in August.

Spent this week: $47.43

Spent year to date: $3,735.08

Stash Report – Week 29, 2016

For the fabric stash:  I bought more fabric.  5 yards more fabric.  I’m still in the black… barely.  I take comfort in that Moon Glow will be finished soon and I’ll be able to add those numbers in the “used” portion.  It’s been a long time coming.  Once that is done, I’ll be quilting Hampton Ridge and that’s another huge quilt that will keep me in the black.  We’ll see how it goes though. To be fair, I had a gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket.  It was for a quilt shop I rarely go to.  Even though it is an LQS, it’s not my favorite.  They do have a fabulous fabric selection but I don’t like to go here.  But I had a gift certificate so I went and ended up leaving with 5 yards.

  • Used this week: 0 yards
  • Used year to date: 34 yards
  • Added this week: 5 yards
  • Added year to Date: 33.625 yards
  • Net USED for 2016: 0.375 yards

For the Budget:

Obviously, even though I had a gift certificate I still ended up spending cash because I bought more than what I had on the gift certificate. 🙁  In addition, I was able to get my quarter inch for the Brother machine and I learned when the embroidery and sewing classes were at the shop.  I know there are a lot of people who can just figure things out but I enjoy learning at classes.  It’s so much easier for me.  So my plan is to go to classes.  I’m going to put it on my schedule now for a month from now so that I don’t start putting things on my calendar during those times.

Spent this week: $65.35

Stash Report – Week 28, 2016

I spent the morning yesterday running errands and the afternoon playing with fabric!  It was wonderful!  I did pick up the kit for Row 3 of Spooky Halloween and in the process purchased a wonderful bundle of fat quarter linens.  So I have a bit to add this week.  Still in the black but Moon Glow will be finished soon so that will bring my numbers up a bit.

For the fabric stash:

  • Used this week: 0 yards
  • Used year to date: 34 yards
  • Added this week: 1.25 yards
  • Added year to Date: 28.625 yards
  • Net USED for 2016: 5.375 yards

For the Budget:

In addition to the BOM fees for this month, the linen bundle, I also purchased thread at my LQS and at Hawthorne Threads.  Every time I get a 50w thread from Aurifil, I get the same color in 40w, 28w, and 12w.  It helps increase my collection in the different weights.  I don’t do this for the neutral colors because I only want to have the different weights of thread for decorative stitching that I do periodically.  You just never know when you’ll need a particular color in a particular weight.

Spent this week: $106.20

Spent year to date: $3,622.30

For the yarn stash:

I had a chance to find the yarn I bought while on vacation and add it to the numbers this week.

Stash Report – Week 27, 2016

I’m back!  Just arrived late last night and I’m up early.  I will take some time today to unpack and organize myself but first, the numbers:

For the fabric stash:

As I mentioned in a previous post I bought 2 yards while on vacation!  I’m so extremely happy with myself for not buying a lot but it wasn’t my diligence that saved me.  I really was anticipating purchasing a lot, buying a new suitcase and pay for checking it in.  But the first two shops I visited were nice but didn’t carry a lot of fabric selection.  The third shop was nice and I bought a yard but they had a better yarn selection so I bought some yarn instead.  The fourth shop had great fabric but the employees didn’t even acknowledge my entrance or me wandering around the shop.  I saw a lot of fabric I could have gone home with but I was so irritated by the lack of customer service that I just bought one yard.  Why should I give good money to support a shop when they couldn’t even deign to say hi to me.

  • Used this week: 0 yards
  • Used year to date: 34 yards
  • Added since last report: 2 yards
  • Added year to Date: 27.375 yards
  • Net USED for 2016: 6.625 yards

For the Budget:

Total spent while on vacation for my quilty/knitty fixation was a mere $98.39.  Most of it was on yarn.  Here’s the damage:

Spent since last report: $98.39

Spent year to date: $3,516.10

For the yarn stash:

I added yardage to my yarn stash but it’s still in a bag somewhere.  Today’s goal is to unpack and get things organized.  Once I do I’ll need to update this report. 🙂

Stash Report – Week 25, 2016

Happy fathers day

And now for the numbers:

For the fabric stash:

My guild met on Monday and I received 27 strips of black and white fabric.  I’m pretty sure the colorway was chosen to complement the yellow strips we swapped a couple of months ago.  So that’s about 1.875 yards added.  I’m in the final stages of quilting Moon Glow.  When I get back from vacation I plan to finish it up, get the binding and label on and count these yards USED.  Until then… I’m still barely in the black.

  • Used this week: 0 yards
  • Used year to date: 34 yards
  • Added this week: 1.875 yards
  • Added year to Date: 25.375 yards
  • Net USED for 2016: 8.625 yards

For the Budget:

I joined another quilty project at my LQS called Quilty Little Christmas.  I enjoy doing projects with my local quilty group.  But it’s taking time.  I asked my daughter to help with this project.  Since we’re away on vacation for the rest of June, this project will have to wait until we get back in July.  That means we’ll already be behind but hopefully we’ll be able to catch up when we get back.  I also still need to get the book.  Here’s the damage:

Spent this week: $40.25

I had to trim a bit of the gray of the center flower so that it would line up right with the black part.  I wasn’t enjoying stitching this as I had trimmed the black part too much.

img_0478

Each of the centers were trimmed prior to applique’ing the top piece down so that it will not be too bulky later.  So in parts where the applique was too close to the inner line, I had to be very careful in making sure I held all the pieces together so that my needle and fabric wouldn’t come off and produce a hole.  It was aggravating and once I finished this piece, I put it away.

Until next time…

Stash Report – Week 23, 2016

Moon Glow On the frame 6/5/2016

Moon Glow
On the frame
6/5/2016

I’ve been diligently working on Moon Glow a bit every afternoon after work.  Some days it goes by fast and I think, “hey, I’m getting the hang of this… I can do quite a few more quilts on this machine!”  Then other days, Bailey is unhappy with me for whatever reason and thread nests and other issues occur.  I just have to walk away from the frame and come back the next afternoon.  Of course, I have to run through my quality checks:

  1. remove and replace the bobbin, and if that doesn’t fix it
  2. rethread the machine, and if that doesn’t fix it
  3. remove the bobbin, swipe around the inside and get as much of the dust as possible, and if that doesn’t fix it
  4. check the tension, and if that doesn’t fix it
  5. as a last resort, change the needle.

I have about 3 passes left to do and I’m done quilting the inner part.  Like I usually do, I’ll save the border for my domestic.  I’ve gotten comfortable with doing it this way and it’s mainly because I’m more comfortable with my little Bernina than I am with quilting small spaces with the Bailey.   I’ve got 9 days to get this quilted before we leave for Florida.  Wish me luck!

And now for the numbers:

For the fabric stash:

I bought fabric.  I went into my LQS looking for something and not finding it.  But I was at the shop so I couldn’t not buy anything.  I ended up going home with 3.5 yards. 🙂

All of those pieces are not applique’d down.  They are nicely laid out and when I’m done working with the project, I roll it all up and hope that nothing moves too bad.  They will always move a little but as long as I don’t lose any pieces, I’m okay with it.  Here is where I am at now:

I was enjoying the hand work so much that I did the next inner circle:

Stash Report – Week 22, 2016

First the numbers:

Last week I used up 2 yards of fabric to make a practice sandwich, load it onto the quilt frame, and practice quilting to resolve any tension, thread issues on Bailey.  I forgot to add it to the “used” numbers.  I plan to bury the thread and bind it to use as a lap quilt while watching TV or something.  In addition, I gave 5 purple fat quarters at the Valley Modern Quilt Guild meeting last Monday.  For every fat quarter we bring, we get a ticket and then a ticket is drawn and the winner gets all the fat quarters.  Did I win? Nope so I get to add to my used numbers. 🙂

And for Slow Stitching Sunday with Kathy at Kathy Quilts, I plan to work on A Rainbow Garden again today!  So I took a break from this project a bit.  After I finished block 4, I prepped block 5 by tracing all the parts onto freezer paper, pressing them onto the fabric and cutting all the fabric to make all the pieces.  Then 2 weeks went by.  This week, I really enjoyed getting back to the project and hand applique’ing the bits.  I didn’t follow the instructions though.

Moon Glow Finally loaded on the quilt frame 5/21/2016

Moon Glow
Finally loaded on the quilt frame
5/21/2016

Okay so I decided to get over myself and quilt Moon Glow. I’m using Superior Thread’s Fantastico’s #5122 for the top thread and Superior’s Bottom Line to quilt it.  For the batting, I’m using Hobbs 80/20 blend. Not by choice really.  Did you know that you can only get black batting as a blend? Anyway, I quilted a practice sandwich last night to test my thread and my tension since I was having problems with this thread on a previous quilt.  And I was able to get things working.  I do not have the control I want on my Bailey to quilt this the way I really want to quilt it but I decided that done is better than perfect.  I do not know when/if I’ll ever get to that perfect state but I am done waiting.  I was intending to go to the sewing machine place to rent out the Bernina long arm but I can only long arm a bit at a time so it was stressing me out to have to get this on a frame and quilted within a certain time slot.  So here I am finally.  Moon Glow is on the frame and I’ll be working on quilting this.

In the meantime, nothing used and nothing added.
