Getting my sewjo back… fixing the space where it all happens

Earlier this year, we got rid of our office space (outside of the home) and opted to save money and move everyone virtual.  For me, that meant my sewing room/office became my full-time office.  And part time sewing room.  While I love working from home, every time the weekend and evenings came, I would stay out of this space.  That meant that my happy place was no longer my happy place and I stayed away from that room whenever I was not working.  I decided things weren’t working.  I want to sew again but I was cramped and I had no room to pull things out and craft. I needed a change and I needed to revamp my space so it would once again be a place of joy.

Here’s what it looked like before:

It’s so cluttered and full of stuff.  A couple of weekends ago the hubby promised to help move out the big entertainment center and move another piece of heavy furniture in its place.  Since he agreed to do that I didn’t see any harm in just changing the whole room around.  To help with the change, I moved everything out.

And here’s my room rearranged:

It’s still a work in progress.  There is a bunch of stuff cluttered around that I need to organize better and I’ve still got a lot of stuff waiting to be put away in my living room.  But I also got rid of a lot of stuff (thrown away, to be sold, or to be donated).  But I’m much happier now with it the way it is.  And I hope as I continue to craft and work in here I will find other ways to make it better.

Happy New Year! ?

So I posted my blog post earlier today with the intention to work on Tell It To The Stars!  I’m really done with this quilt and I just needed to get it finished.  The piecing was great!  But the quilting was far from it.  I had trouble with the machine. I had trouble with the frame.  I had trouble all the way around.  I should change the name of the quilt to Trouble!  Anyway, I haven’t been quilting on it because I just about hated looking at it.  But because it sits in my living room I had to look at it every day.  Every time I looked at it I would just cringe.  So this morning I told myself to forget about it, just get ‘er done and then I can at least send my machine off to get it professionally cleaned and serviced.  And within minutes of me posting my post, the hubby decided he wanted to clear out the garage.  I discovered that the best way to get a hubby to clear out the garage is for him to get a new car!  I’ve been wanting to clear the garage for months to continue my decluttering frenzy. The hubby wasn’t in the mood to do anything in the garage until today!

If you remember from previous posts – here’s what my garage looked like before:

The hubby swears that we didn’t get rid of anything and all we did was move things around.  Especially reducing empty boxes from the move.  I think we got rid of some stuff and found some things.  We brought stuff into the house that we hadn’t before just because we didn’t know they were out there.  I found my bread maker and a roasting pan.  We brought in a lamp that we didn’t know where to put before now.  But the best thing is that all my scrapbooking supplies and all my craft boxes that I found were moved to my office.  So, this morning when I did task 2 of the 2015 countdown, I took my sewing closet apart to pull out all the UFOs.  Then I put them all back nice and neat.  It was organized and clean.  Now my office has all the craft boxes from the garage in it.

I forgot to take a picture of my sewing space before I added all the craft boxes so you’ll have to just imagine the clean floor.  Here it is now:

It’s a mess.  I basically blocked off my sewing machine and in order for me to get to it, I’ll need to tackle some of those bags and bins. But, I’m excited that now I can go through all of that stuff and remove the things that I will not use anymore and find homes for the things I will use.  The hubby even mentioned that I really need to get back to scrapbooking since the last complete album we have is from 2005.  😀

After we cleared out the garage, I couldn’t reach my sewing machine so I ended up quilting Tell It To The Stars like I originally set out to do in the first place. 🙂

My sewing machine has been used this week and I’ll let you know what I’ve been up to later. I moved out the dark bookcase and moved in the white dresser.  It works better in that spot.  I’m able to put my iron and board on top as well as hide all my current WIPs and UFOs in the drawers below.  The plastic bins under and around the table are fabric and knitting items that are going to be put away in the laundry room while I’m not using it.  I’m hoping to get shelves or bookcases one day so my fabric can be lovingly displayed.

My desk, where I spend most of my life, is pretty much set.  The files inside still need to be organized a little but things are finding their way where they need to be.  🙂

My bookshelf is still disorganized but my printer now works and all the drawers are filled.  I’ve got a drawer for CrossStitch, CardMaking, Scrapbooking, etc. At some point, I’ll have to go through the bookcase and organize it better.  My Quilty books are not unpacked yet and I think I’m not going to have them in this room.  We’re putting up a bookshelf in living room #2 so I think I’ll put them there.

And here’s all that’s left for me to unpack in my room. I’ve done a lot this past week.  I’ve cut the pile to half of what it was last week.  I’m not sure what is even here.  My goal is to tackle a portion every day this upcoming week.  I have a feeling that the rest of this stuff will be more difficult to go through, unpack, find a home for or get rid of so I’ll take it a bit at a time.

It’s Saturday and I’ll be unpacking and quilting.  We’ve got a couple of birthday parties to go to later today so my quilting time is going to be short today.

🙂 Happy Quilting
