This weekend’s lineup

I can’t believe how time flies.  It’s just amazing!

I was able to get a little hand applique in on Raining Cats and Dogs… not enough to take a picture but I’m happy that I got a few inches on there.  It’s way better than not touching it all and I’m okay with that.  I started my yoga practice again at Core Power Yoga.  The unlimited monthly classes is way more ($155 vs $65/month) than what I was paying in Northern California so I took advantage of a Groupon that I found.  I don’t know what I’ll do when the Groupon expires in a few weeks but I have a hunch I’ll be looking for a new Groupon. 🙂  I feel so much better than last weekend.  Work is still work and it’s kicking my butt.  I really have to start hiring again but I finally found a team I like to work with and the dynamics always change when we bring a new person in the mix.  I’m not sure I want to mess with it at the moment.  I’m also not sure if the increased workload is temporary or if it will last past the holidays.  I may hire temporary part time support and if the work continues as it is make a more permanent decision in the new year.  Well, until that happens I’m working every weekend until the end of November.

Despite all the work, I will be sure to put in some quality quilting time.  I need it to keep me balanced/sane.  Today’s quilt project is to start the foundation piecing part of Moon Glow.  I do not know if I’ll be able to finish it this weekend but I’ll get it started and we’ll go from there.

On my wish list… I want to get another 2 blocks quilted on Flowers and Baskets and I want to get more of the hand applique done on Raining Cats and Dogs.  I also want to finish Kayla’s cowl.

Only 2 more rows and I’m done so that may actually be at the top of the wish list.  🙂

My goal is to get Moon Glow caught up this weekend.  After this one I’ve got 1 left to do.  I haven’t looked at it yet so depending on how complex it looks I may jump on it after this post or do something different and possibly get back to it tomorrow.  I’m really happy with how things are going.  It does save time to get these done at once rather than move to something else and come back to this in a few weeks.  The Bernina is already set up with the black thread (not that it takes too long to switch, but is one less step to do).  I’ve already got the process in my head so I do not have to think about what step comes next.  All in all, it was a quick turn around to get this block done.

Now, the process I detailed during Block 7 basically matched up until about this point… This is where all the foundation piecing was complete and I had to finish it with some other method.

Moon Glow Foundation Piecing Completed

The pattern had instructions to do the center star first.  From previous blocks, I opted not to do this.  Doing the center star first caused me to have to do Y-Seams and resulted in major puckering in the middle.  I’m not as proficient doing Y-Seams so I opted to do something different.

First, I opted to create plastic templates for the individual pieces.  I had a big piece of plastic for templates that I purchased from Joann’s awhile ago that I would normally have used.  But in getting my template paper out earlier I found some smaller pieces of plastic that I thought I should use up before cutting into the larger plastic piece.  This smaller piece was purchased at a LQS a couple of years ago and I was amazed at the difference between the larger piece and the smaller piece.  It reminded me of why I should purchase items at my LQS – the quality was that much better.  The smaller piece was thicker and sturdier than the larger piece.  It reminded me of when I first learned how to quilt traditionally.  I know it sounds cumbersome, but I basically created each plastic template, traced and cut the fabric by hand, and then pieced everything by hand.  You can see the end result at My Hand Quilt.  I enjoyed the process of piecing the hand quilt.  And I enjoyed this process despite having to create all the templates by hand.  I can really see the benefit of doing this for ONE block.

First, I put the pattern on a light box and placed my plastic piece on it. I traced the pattern onto the plastic.  In this case, all the lines were straight so I used a ruler to keep everything straight. I used a regular sharpie so the lines are thick.  If I wanted to be more accurate, I would have used a fine point sharpie.  Today, it seems, I wasn’t in the mood to look for my fine point sharpie.

Creating Templates Step 1 - Copy the template onto the plastic

Step 1 –

Then, I cut the plastic with my ruler and my rotary blade.  When I’m in the mood, I try to right the quilt name, the block #, and the piece letter or number on the plastic template.  I don’t know if I’ll ever create this block again, but if I do – it’s nice to know I don’t have to create the template again.

Stash Report – Week 33, 2014

I was able to get a lot done on Moon Glow this weekend!  I finished Block 7 on Friday, Block 8 yesterday and Block 9 (which the pattern had me make two of) is almost done.  So I’m well on my way to getting Moon Glow caught up for this month.  But still nothing used and thank goodness, nothing added.

Moon Glow – Month 7: Sea of Vapor

I love Month 7 of Moon Glow.  It’s my favorite so far.  I did pretty well with the exception of one part where I trimmed too much.  My points lined up pretty well.  I’m really happy with how this is coming along.

Step 1: Change the thread on the machine

Moon Glow, Step 1 Change the thread on the machine

Moon Glow,
Step 1
Change the thread on the machine

I like to use black thread because it hides better in the dark fabric.  I periodically forget to do this when I work on different months so I’m sure when I put the blocks all together it will be noticeable.  This is one of those things that I learned as I went.

Step 2: Print the templates

I use Carol Doak’s Foundation Paper to print the templates on.  I’ve had these forever and I’m not sure what project I had originally bought them for.  I’m sure there is probably something cheaper I can find and use so if you have any ideas, please let me know.

Step 3: Sort the fabric, Press and Cut

I have a ton of little pieces from previous months so I like to use up what I can before I cut into the new fabric that came with the kit for this month.  For some fabrics I have enough pieces from the previous month where I do not even use the piece that came this month.

Moon Glow Step 2 Sort the fabric

Moon Glow
Step 3
Sort the fabric

Step 4: 1st and 2nd Piece

I have Carol Doak’s class, “Mastering Foundation Paper Piecing”, on Craftsy.  And I use the method she teaches in the class with one minor exception.  Instead of using pins, I glue the first fabric to the paper template with restickable glue.  I used restickable glue when I worked on the Iris Cameo at my guild’s workshop with Laurel Anderson.  This is the first time I used it when foundation piecing and it was the best method I’ve used for that first piece of fabric.  Pins tend to shift.  Then I trimmed the fabric between 1 and 2, placed fabric 2 down and sewed.

Step 5: Press

When I press, I have to be careful because the markings on the template transfers onto my ironing board.  So I put a piece of dark fabric on the ironing board.  That way if the template transfers to the fabric – you can’t tell and my ironing board is safe.  It’s not a big deal but I’m afraid that if the markings are on my board, it might transfer onto lighter fabric later for different projects.  That’s a big deal for me if it should ever happen.

Step 7: Once all the fabric is sewed on, trim all the sides of the templates

I messed up on one of the pieces where I trimmed too much of one of the sides.  It caused me problems later when I sewed all the pieces together and later, it didn’t lie flat on this side without causing puckering.  Luckily it’s the black part so it’s not very noticeable.

Step 9: Applique the center and piece the borders on

This month asked me to applique the center.  It isn’t always this way but I find I have more control in making sure the block lies flat better in the middle when I applique the center.

Hopefully you enjoyed my step by step process.  It’s different enough from Month 6 where I felt that I wasn’t repeating everything all over again.

On a personal note: the kids started school last week and the girl caught something. 🙁  She stayed home sick yesterday and we’re not leaving the house this weekend so guess what?  I get to stay home and play in my sewing room! 🙂

Moon Glow, Block 6, Sea of Fertility

The middle is an eight pointed star so Y-Seams are very important.  The dark blue center is small.  These pieces are about 1.5 inches and were a pain to the points to match.  I was really happy with the results.

Then to attach the lighter blue triangle was another set of Y-Seams.  Every time I have to do Y-Seams I take a look at Crafty’s 2013 BOM class.  I can’t remember which month it is but I’ve got it bookmarked to watch whenever I have to do them.

Then step 2 had to do with getting the foundation pieces put together.  I had cut the fabric months ago while I was still in Fremont.  I want to say May as I was caught up for a bit right before then.  So getting the pieces stitched to the paper was pretty easy.

Tell It To The Stars May Block 5/4/2014

Tell It To The Stars
May Block
5/4/2014

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  How do you plan to celebrate?  I will be sitting at my desk working but tonight… Oh the possibilities! ;0

For BOM Away Monday, here is May’s block of the mystery BOM Tell It To The Stars! hosted by Judy Laquidara of Patchwork Times.  It’s been the one BOM I’ve been able to stay caught up with from month to month.

In regards to the other current BOMs I’m working on

Moon Glow – I’ve got this month’s kit and since I didn’t make it to the quilt shop this weekend for Easy Street’s binding, I may just take this out and work on it a little bit each day.  Maybe by the end of the week I’ll have it done.

Hampton Ridge – I’ve got two kits waiting for me to tackle.  I have a quilt guild workshop on Saturday and Sunday is Mother’s Day.  I would like to sit around and play with my sewing machine but my Momma might not be thrilled with this.  On the other hand, she doesn’t want to go out either.  So I’m playing Sunday by ear.  For myself, I plan to take her and the girl to high tea at a local tea shop here on Wednesday.  Friday evening I want to have dinner somewhere – still looking into where but for dessert, I think we’ll trek it over to San Francisco and check out the bread pudding place my cousin has been raving about. All that to say – I want to get started on Hampton Ridge on Sunday but it will depend on what the Momma ends up wanting to do.

Those are the top three BOMs, I’ve got A Rainbow Garden too but that’s just way behind and I haven’t worked on it since the cheer season ended.  I used to work on it diligently on the days I took the girl to cheer practice.  Now that I’m not sitting around for 3 hours with just hand work, I’m playing with the sewing machine instead. 🙂  The mood will hit me again one day.  Maybe after Raining Cats and Dogs is complete.  I can only do one hand project at a time.

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 5 of Moon Glow!  I’m now caught up with the BOM and I’m so happy!  I know I’ll be getting the next kit for Hampton Ridge so it would have been nice if I’d worked on that kit.  But I didn’t have time to finish 4 blocks so I chose to do the one block left for Moon Glow.  I wasn’t expecting to get it done since there looked to be a lot of pieces to put together.  But it came together pretty easily.  You can’t tell in the picture but the middle is a little fluffy.  I’m hoping as I continue to do more foundation piecing, these will flatten out more.

Since I edited my post from the Sunday stash late with a picture of Block 2 of Raining Cats and Dogs, I’m reposting a picture of it here.

Stash Report – Week 3, 2014

I’ve been plugging along this week working on a bit of everything.  But nothing to add to the used list.  A bit of work on Raining Cats and Dogs, and Rainbow Garden.  Hampton Ridge Block 10 and most of Moon Glow block 2.  I’m hoping to get that done sometime this morning.

I am taking my sewing machine in to the shop.  It’s been acting a little funny – the thread has been snapping a lot lately and I’m not sure why.  It could be nothing but I’d rather be safe than sorry.  I’ve cleaned it to the best of my ability but I guess it needs someone to go in to all those tiny places I can’t reach.  This is a perfect time to take it in as I’ll be travelling this week for work and will not be at home to use it anyway.  Great news for my hand projects.  🙂

Moon Glow, an Update on my epic fail

Moon Glow BOM Block 1 Finished January 5, 2014

Moon Glow BOM
Block 1 Finished
January 5, 2014

Last week I posted a picture of the first block for the Moon Glow BOM.   I signed up for it last summer and received the first block in December.  I was itching to rip into it but when I looked at the instructions I was very confused.  So I set it aside.  I received the second block and that was when I forced myself to just do it.  I don’t want to get behind on my BOMs if I can help it.    So this block is an epic fail.  The instructions have 3 methods you can choose to complete the block: hand, freezer paper, and foundation paper.  But it’s not like it has separate instructions for if you choose to do hand, freezer paper or foundation paper.  It starts with the general instruction.  Then a page for the freezer paper templates.  Then a page for the foundation paper templates.  And so I’m flipping through pages trying to figure out what I’m doing.  I am not doing this by hand.  I’m not doing this by freezer paper.  I don’t know how I would do this by freezer paper… So the only real option is foundation paper.

I just started doing foundation paper piecing with the Lucky Stars BOM and I’m not very good or experienced with it.  But the Lucky Stars BOM has excellent instructions for the newbie foundation paper piecer.  Elizabeth Dackson goes through EACH STEP with incredible detail.  I also am reviewing Carol Doak’s class “Mastering Foundation Paper Piecing” on Craftsy to help me with the technique. Today, I’m going to work on Block 2 and I hope it goes much better than Block 1.  I still do not know what I’m going to eventually do with the puckering of Block 1 but I received a few wonderful ideas last week.  ==Thank you Ladies!===

Here are the two ideas I’m playing with…

Option 1 – cut through the middle and tuck and sew to reduce (hopefully get rid of) the big pucker

Option 2 – Applique something over the center to cover the pucker.

I’m leaning with Applique-ing something over the center.  But I’m not sure yet.  I figure if the applique doesn’t work I can always go back to Option 1.  🙂  I’m not ready to do anything yet as I want to get a few of these blocks under my belt before so.

Here’s to a better block 2!

~Melanie
