Moon Glow BOM Block 5 Finished April 27, 2014

Moon Glow BOM
Block 5 Finished
April 27, 2014

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 5 of Moon Glow!  I’m now caught up with the BOM and I’m so happy!  I know I’ll be getting the next kit for Hampton Ridge so it would have been nice if I’d worked on that kit.  But I didn’t have time to finish 4 blocks so I chose to do the one block left for Moon Glow.  I wasn’t expecting to get it done since there looked to be a lot of pieces to put together.  But it came together pretty easily.  You can’t tell in the picture but the middle is a little fluffy.  I’m hoping as I continue to do more foundation piecing, these will flatten out more.

Since I edited my post from the Sunday stash late with a picture of Block 2 of Raining Cats and Dogs, I’m reposting a picture of it here.

For BOM Away Monday, here is last month’s kit of Hampton Ridge.  Once I fell behind on this BOM it took awhile for me to get back into the hang of things.  I can’t believe two months have gone by since I last worked on it.  I got these 5 done this weekend and I’ve got this month’s kit waiting for me to do.  Maybe next weekend I’ll be able to retrieve all of the previous blocks to display on the design wall.

For BOM Away Monday, here is this month’s block of Tell It to The Stars.  I’m happy to be caught up with this BOM.  It’s the only BOM I’m caught up with but that’s okay.  Life took over the last few months.  I started working on Moon Glow (the February block) over the weekend but didn’t get it finished.  Hopefully that will be completed soon.  I’m back to LA this week for a few days but I’m home for the weekend and that’s when I get most of my sewing done.

Tell It To The Stars 3/17/14

Tell It To The Stars
3/17/14

For BOM Away Monday, here is this month’s block of Tell It to The Stars.  I haven’t been able to post my Monday posts lately. But I’m squeezing this in today.  I was up to date on three of the five BOMs I’ve got going right now.  As of this weekend, I’m up to speed on only one – Tell It to The Stars.  I’m a month behind with Hampton Ridge and Moon Glow.  I’ll probably stay behind until April. I’m out of town for the last two weekends of March.  By April I’ll be two months behind.  The other two BOMs I’m really behind on – A Rainbow Garden is behind about 4 months.  This one is all hand work with wool so I’m just going to keep plugging away at it knowing that it will just have to be that way.  I was able to get the December block prepped last night so all I have to do is applique down the pieces.  I’ll be taking this and Raining Cats and Dogs with me on my trips south.  The last one is Lucky Star which is always the last one on my list.  I really shouldn’t have participated with the 2014 program when I barely did anything on the 2013 BOM.  Going forward in regards to BOMs – three is an okay number to do.  I can do a 4th if it is primarily handwork but will have to adjust my overall calendar since that that will take longer to finish than the others.

Hampton Ridge BOM Block 11 Finished February 9, 2014

Hampton Ridge BOM
Block 11 Finished
February 9, 2014

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 11 of Hampton Ridge.  I’m debating between this and Block 9 for favorite block so far.  I am loving pinwheels right now and I’m thinking about doing a pinwheel quilt at some point in the distant future.  I squeezed this in last night before bed.  I wanted to get this one done this weekend but I doubt I’ll have time to do any more of these blocks during the next two weeks.  I’ve got about 5 blocks waiting for me to finish before the next kit arrives and I’m going to try really hard to get some of them done during the week.

Hampton Ridge BOM Block 10 Finished January 17, 2014

Hampton Ridge BOM
Block 10 Finished
January 17, 2014

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 10 of Hampton Ridge.  Not a favorite but it was easy to put together.  These blocks are getting easier and easier (of course, now that I’ve said the next one is going to be hard!)  I believe that I’m just getting better at understanding the instructions and my scant 1/4 inch is more accurate as I continue my quilting progress.  I’ve never before the last 7 months quilted as regularly as I am now and my accuracy and understanding is approving greatly.  I love it! I have two more blocks to go before I’m done for this month and I know I’m not going to get to it.  I’m travelling next week and I’m not back until Sunday evening.  Then I’ve got to pick up my machine (which should be ready by then) and then it’s February.  Life is going to get even busier these next few weeks.  My mom is having a small party on February 1 and then the girl has cheer competition the next two weekends.  The weekend after that finds me and the hubby in Vegas celebrating his birthday.  So I’m going to have to quilt during the week and around these life events.  🙂  I hope I don’t far too far behind my BOMs.

Moon Glow BOM Block 2 Finished January 18, 2014

Moon Glow BOM
Block 2 Finished
January 18, 2014

I’m really happy that Block 2 of Moon Glow was much better than Block 1.  I paid close attention to the instructions.  The square in the middle was appliqued on and I know it isn’t straight or anything but I like it this way.  I was watching Carol Doak’s Mastering Foundation Paper Piecing on Craftsy to help me as I foundation pieced the star together and it helped a lot!  I’m now caught up with the Moon Glow BOM!

The other BOMs are: Tell it to the stars – which I’m caught up with!  A Rainbow Garden – I’m three months behind on this one.  I’m working on Block 3 but this is primarily hand work.  I’ll be taking this with me as I travel around so I’m hoping I get a lot done before the next kit comes in February. And finally Lucky Stars!  I’m letting the 2013 BOM go and I may get back to it when my current BOMs finish off.  But I couldn’t help but get into the 2014 BOM when Elizabeth rolled out her special for this year.  I think it was $10 for the year?  I can’t remember but I got it last November or December.  I’m not yet late but with my upcoming schedule I do not know if I’ll be able to get this caught up before the end of February.  In the meantime, I still need to pick out fabric anyway. 🙂

For Design Wall Monday, it was getting full with all the BOMs on there so I removed everything and kept only Hampton Ridge up.

Hampton Ridge BOM Block 9 Finished January 11, 2014

Hampton Ridge BOM
Block 9 Finished
January 11, 2014

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 9 of Hampton Ridge.  I absolutely love this block.  It is now my favorite block in this BOM so far.  I may at some point make a quilt filled with this block.

I am slowly feeling much better.  Being sick really put me out of things for a bit.  I did get through the worst part fairly quickly but I’ve been out of sorts for a few weeks at least.  Not to mention, I’m still working a lot more than normal.  But I got back into the quilting groove this weekend.  It actually started Thursday when I spent the evening hand applique-ing Raining Cats and Dogs.  Then on Friday, I snipped all the ends of the Chevrons for Celtic Solstice while watching the girl at open gym practicing her tumbling skills.  When I got home I got most of Block 9 for Hampton Ridge finished and finished it off Saturday morning.  Then I spent the rest of the day doing the first clue for Tell It To The Stars.  I probably could have done it much faster but I kept stopping to take step by step pictures.  I think they turned out pretty well.

With step 2 finally done and step 3 done as well I’m ready to finish the 4 patches that was step 4.  Those should be done fairly quick this coming weekend and I can get going on step 5.  I haven’t even started that step so I have no idea if that will be fast or something like step 2.  I really want to get this top done this month and it really depends on how quickly step 5 and step 6 come together.  I’ll keep you posted with how things go!

Happy quilting everyone!

For Design Wall Monday, I put Missing Ivy back up on the wall.  I had no place to put it and it looks bright and pretty on the wall.  Check out more design walls at Patchwork Times.

We received the final step of Bonnie Hunter’s Celtic Solstice Mystery on New Year’s and I haven’t done anything with it.  Over the last week I went back to step 1, finished all of the blue/white triangle pieces and then went to step 2.  I’m stuck on this step.  I’ve worked on it for the last 5 days and I’m really tired of chevrons.  I finally got all of the left and right sides pieced so that now my next step is to snip away the ends and press.  Then I’ll be ready to piece the two sides together.  I’ve got 132 already completed and I just need the remaining 112 to do.

Celtic Solstice - Step 2

Celtic Solstice – Step 2

Step 3 and 4 are all almost done so those shouldn’t take too long to do.  I haven’t done anything with Step 5.  Now that the big reveal is over I can go at a slower pace.  But I want to get this done as soon as possible.  I still need to quilt Easy Street and get going on other projects I want to do so I really want to get this out of the way.  I do have to say that I wasn’t thrilled by the reveal.  I don’t know why.  However I’ve seen a number of finished ones from a bunch of different blogs and it’s growing on me.  Of the ones I’ve seen so far, they have been the colors Bonnie featured.  So I haven’t looked yet at any that chose different colorways.  I’d be interested to see if I like them more or not.  I noticed that of the ones I liked the best I really like the bright fabrics more so than the muted fabrics.

Hampton Ridge BOM Block Finished December 13, 2013

Hampton Ridge BOM
Block Finished
December 13, 2013

For BOM Away Monday, I am showcasing Block 6 of Hampton Ridge.   This one was much easier to make than any of the other blocks.  But I’m not as thrilled with this one as I usually am.  I guess this one is not a favorite of mine.  But out of 44 blocks, it’s okay to have some that are not a favorite.

For Design Wall Monday, I’ve removed Missing Ivy since that has again been pushed to the bottom of my WIP list and placed all the completed Hampton Ridge blocks together.  I do like to see it come together.  Check out more design walls at Patchwork Times.

We received the third step of Bonnie Hunter’s Celtic Solstice Mystery on Friday and I did as much as I could during the weekend.  Somewhere in Bonnie’s instructions she says to do as much as you can for each step but to move on when she provides the next step.  So that is what I have been doing.  Last week I was only able to cut for Step 2.  During the week, I only accomplished a bit of the piecing.  I finished 8 chevrons by the end of the week.  Rather than chain piece and have nothing finished, I started by doing a few from start to finish.  At first, I was very frustrated.  The first one I did, I pressed towards the green.  The points didn’t match.  Then the next few I pressed one side towards the green and the other side away from the green.  The points still didn’t match.  I couldn’t understand why the pressing instructions weren’t included.  I’ve noticed that pressing instructions aren’t always given in patterns and it irritates me so.  I was taught to press to the dark so if there aren’t instructions that is what I do.  But when my points do not match it’s usually because I pressed in the wrong direction.  Anyway I was getting frustrated that my points weren’t matching so I re-read the instructions again and found the pressing instructions.  ha-Reader Error!  Once I followed the instructions, my points were matching.  Not always but much better.  Once I knew how to do the finished piece, I started chain sewing the green/white pairs.  Soon, it was Friday, the 13th… and all I accomplished were 8 finished chevrons about 150 green/white pairs and that was it.

For Step 3, I cut a few of the orange and yellow strips….

I used the Easy Angle ruler that I purchased for Easy Street last year to cut the Triangles, per Bonnie’s instructions.  I really liked having to use a ruler I had on hand.  I have a bunch of specialty rulers and I find that they usually just take up space.  And, I didn’t know I could use this ruler this way.  I really liked making Half Square Triangles (HSTs) like this.  It is much easier than pinning 2 squares, drawing a line, sewing on both sides of the line and then cutting.  That’s what I did for Missing Ivy and now that I know this way, I’m going to use this way from now on.

This time I read carefully and I didn’t see pressing instructions.  She gave instructions when we got to the pinwheel but not at these stages.  So I had to do a few to figure out the best pressing directions.  At first I pressed to the Orange for each step.  And it was fine when I joined two HSTs together.  But when I joined the two pairs together to make the pinwheel, the points would not match.  It’s a trick with the sewing machine and how the pieces are placed together.  If you’ve been quilting for awhile, you probably know what I’m talking about.  If not, I’ll try to take pictures of what I’m talking about while I work on more pieces this week.  Suffice it to say that for the HST, press to the Yellow.  For the 2 Pairs, press to the Orange.  And for the Pinwheels, press to the Orange.  They butt up nicely together and the points match up easier than pressing in the other directions.

And even though I didn’t get everything we need to have for this step, I got a lot done considering how much time I was actually able to be in my sewing area.

For BOM Away Monday, I am showcasing Block 5 of Hampton Ridge.   Despite a whirlwind week, I was able to finish Block 5.  I’m enjoying this BOM.  It is time consuming because there are 4 blocks per month which means I have to do one each week to stay on track but I think they’re cute.  Check out more finished BOMs at
