another date with the seam ripper

There seems to be a theme going on for my Tuesday posts.  /sigh.  I started quilting Scrapitude (2015).  I just got back my Bailey and this is my first attempt playing with it.  I loaded the quilt over the weekend and wound a couple of bobbins for the quilt.  I used Superior’s Bottom Line since it worked so well with Tell It To The Stars.  Just to recap for those new to the blog, I was having a lot of thread breakage and other problems when I first started quilting Tell It To The Stars.  They seemed to disappear once I changed out the bobbin thread to Superior’s Bottom Line.  So I used it again here.  And since I got all this wonderful thread at Road and at QuiltCon I decided to use Superior’s Fantastico (#5122) for the top thread.  Anyway, this happened.

I thought it was the machine, or the way I loaded the frame, or anything.  Anyway, I was highly frustrated and I was ready to toss my machine away and go by a new long arm.  (of course I can’t really cuz I don’t have the money yet.) But I wanted to.  Somehow I thought about the thread and that the bottom line is 60w while Fantastico is 40w.  So changed the thread.  I kept the bottom line in the bobbin (just a different color) and used Aurifil’s 50w #2326.  See below!

No skipped stitches!  I believe I can mess with the tension and the 60w will work with the 40w but I didn’t want to figure out how to do it with a quilt on the frame.  I’ll figure it out at some other time.  🙂

Now, I have to go through and remove all those blue stitches.

Weekend Line Up

The girl is going to a quinceanera this evening and I’m the honored one to drive her to the event.  I assume the hubby will pick her up after but I’m not yet sure.  Tomorrow we’ve made plans to meet with a friend for lunch and catch up.  Between those two things, all I’m going to do is quilt and craft! 🙂

First thing on my to do list is:

Hampton Ridge – On Thursday’s list, I needed to attach border #4.  I’ve got 3 of those borders on so I only have the 4th border left and that quilt top will be finished! woohoo!

The next items on my to do list are:

Cross Stitching – I was able to work on it a bit the last couple of nights so I just need to work a bit more on it.  Half of the letter “E” is now complete and almost all of the left side of the embroidery is complete.  I hope to get the “E” and the left half of the embroidery done this weekend.

Take pictures of Hampton Ridge and Tell It To The Stars!

Scrapitude – Trim the back and get it on the frame.  Do you mark before it’s on the frame or after?

Here’s the rest of the stuff on my to do list for the weekend right now.  I hope to get to this list tomorrow.

  1. piece the blocks of Raining Cats and Dogs
  2. Get some knitting done.  Same as cross stitching although I’m not as sad about this one. 🙂
  3. Start the hand work for A Rainbow Garden
  4. And if the stars line up nice, I may get my act together enough to get some scrapbooking in to.

Happy Wednesday!

I’m so excited because I’m almost done with Hampton Ridge!  After all the ripping, I was able to get all 4 borders pieced.

a date with the seam ripper

I was able to get all the HSTs trimmed up and started piecing them together.  I reviewed the pattern before I did and really thought I was well on my way to get these done last night.

img_9623

But apparently half of the HSTs were to be going in one direction while the other half were to go in another direction.  So, I spent the first half of the Clipper V Suns  game ripping, ripping ripping.

Tonight I’ll be working on getting these put back together going in the right direction.

QuiltCon! 2016

I’m off to QuiltCon Pasadena and I plan to post what I see and experience later tonight.  In the meantime, it was raining so I spent yesterday working from home.  The best thing about working from home is that I can do some quilty stuff between work stuff.  So I got all the cutting done for Hampton Ridge!  Woot Woot!  Here are the pictures:

Here's what I started with and I started cutting all 21 of those squares

Then I cut them into half squares.

Then I cut them into half squares.

Then into quarters then into triangles

And once I had all the triangles cut, I removed the paper.

Next Step – Pressing the HSTs.

WIP Wednesday – 2/17/2016

Happy Wednesday!

I’m still working on Tell It To The Stars.  I won’t bore you with another picture of the same thing.  Just know that I’ve got 2 sides completely bound.  I’m about halfway through the 3rd side.  With me at QuiltCon this week, I doubt I will get this finished before the next Sunday Stash Report.

I am happy to report that I did get into the Wool Applique class that I was waitlisted for at QuiltCon.  I got most of my supplies together.  The only thing I need to get is wool.  I’ve never bought wool separately (outside of a kit) before so I am planning on getting some at QuiltCon specifically for this class.

The other major thing I’ve been working on is Hampton Ridge. Border #3 is now on!

Hampton Ridge Border #3 is on 2/17/2016

Now I’m working on Border #4.  There are a gajillion HSTs on Border #4.  It’s funny how one step in this process can be broken down into multiple steps.  In this case, we’re using the Star Singles paper thingies (cuz I don’t know what they’re called).  First I had to cut all the fabric, then I sewed on the lines.

And made 21 of these pieces.

Then I trimmed….

The next step is to cut, cut, and cut!  There’s a lot of cutting there.  Once all those things are cut, I have to remove the paper and press towards the dark of the HST. My goal for this week is to get all the cutting done.

WIP Wednesday – 1/13/2016

Happy Wednesday!

img_9269

My sewing area is still surrounded by scrapbooking bags but I managed to find a space (my lap) to pin pieces of my Celtic Solstice.  I woke up way too early this morning so I took the opportunity to trim and pin.  Didn’t get a chance to sew them together but they can wait patiently until I get a chance.

Added this week: 0 yards
Added Year to Date: 0 yards

As part of my 2016 goals, I want to start tracking my hobby spending.  I’ve set the budget for the year at $3,000 and I’ve allocated a bit for sewing machine servicing, spending money at Road, spending money at QuiltCon and a monthly allowance for bits and things.  I’m not looking to add fabric this year as I want to shop my stash first.  But I know that I’ll need some backing as I finish tops up.  I already have backing for the next 3 quilts so I’ll not need that for awhile unless I start quilting up a storm.  I know there are some things I want to get – inktense pens, for example, and creative grid rulers.  But I don’t NEED anything.  I also know myself and once I get to those shows, I’d want to buy.  So, best to set my budget now and be realistic.

Hobby Budget Report

Spent this week: $0

Spent year to date: $0

And Judy at Patchwork Times  added the yarn report to the sunday stash so I’ll add a yarn report as well.  I’m not a prolific knitter like Judy but lately I’ve been knitting a bit here and there while I watch basketball games with the hubby.  I do have a bit of a yarn stash and I want to use them up before I start buying more.  Nothing added and Nothing used so far.  I’m working on my Rosie hat and that should be finished soon as long as I work on it.  I only do 2 rounds at a time when I do work on it so it takes me a long time. 🙂

And for Slow Stitching Sunday with Kathy at Kathy Quilts, I’m going to continue working on Raining Cats and Dogs.  I worked a bit on the cat yesterday but failed to take a picture.  I hope to have enough energy and time to finish the cat.  Here’s a pic before I started working on the final cat.
