Not so Manic Monday – 2/16/2015

IMG_5917-0

Happy President’s Day!  Today is not a work day for me and I’m so excited.  We had a great weekend with Valentine’s Day, the hubby’s birthday and now today – a non work day!  We have tentative plans to go to the outlets and down by the beach for crab for lunch or an early dinner.  But we had a late night so the rest of the family is still in bed.  I can’t stay in bed past 8am so here I am catching up on some sewing time before everyone wakes up.  We’ll see if they still want to go out when they do wake up.

I have a few fruit trees in our back yard.  I harvested the grapefruits yesterday and tried to give them away to our friends.  Unfortunately no one wants them.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do with them?  My dad loves grapefruit and I would love to ship these to him but my mom says that it’s not good for him.  Some thing about high blood pressure…  So let me know if you’ve got any ideas.  If I do not pick them now, they’ll just be on the ground and I hate to see good fruit go to waste like that.

Now that I’m done with Clue #2 of Scrapitude and I’ve finished the top for the secret project, I’m ready to pull out Tell It To The Stars.

Tell It To The Stars Border #3 is on 2/9/15

I’ve got the month by month project from 2006 or 2007.  I need to figure out what border(s) I want and then I will set this up on Bailey, the mid arm, for me to practice on.  I want to get comfortable with the machine and then use it to quilt Tell It To The Stars afterwards.

And… my sewing room is clean…

2. Tell It To The Stars – stay tuned…

It’s a great weekend!  It always is this time of year.  It’s Valentines Day and then its my Hubby’s birthday and then we’ve got a holiday.  That’s three days of fun.  We plan on going to High Tea with friends on Saturday and someone mentioned heading over to the beach afterwards.  Sunday is the Hubby’s birthday and he hasn’t yet said what he wants to do.  The MIL will be coming over to make something so maybe our friends will come by… And then Monday is President’s Day and I plan on being in my sewing room all day!  It’s going to be a great weekend. 🙂

Happy Quilting everyone!

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

I only have 1 side left to do for border #4 of Tell It To The Stars.  But Clue #2 was released for Scrapitude so I cleaned up my sewing table and set aside Tell It To The Stars and got started on this clue.

I’ve finished 2 of the 4 sides for Border #4 and then there is the final border #5.  Next is the backing.  I am planning on taking all my leftover pieces and putting them together for the back.  I’m pretty sure I do not have enough pieces so I’ll be going through my stash for something to coordinate properly.

Stash Report – Week 6, 2015

It has been a couple of weeks since my last stash report.  So I have a couple of finishes that I’ve posted about but have not yet subtracted from my stash report.  But before that… yesterday, I met up with fellow blogger – JoEllen.  She got a new long-arm and was selling this…

Bailey Mid Arm 2/7/15

Bailey Mid Arm
2/7/15

…Along with a frame and a lot of goodies that are still sitting in the SUV.  The hubby and I will be putting it all together today at some point.  It was a great deal and I had to get it because this kind of opportunity just doesn’t come up all the time.  I’ve been wanting a mid-arm for awhile but didn’t really do anything about it.  But after I got the featherweight, I updated my wish list page and JoEllen messaged me.  It might even have been the same day.  I’m so excited to get this put back together with it’s frame and start quilting on it.  But first, I have to finish a top.  I was thinking about it and I do not have a single top that is ready for quilting.  The closest project that will be ready for quilting is Tell It To The Stars…

Tell It To The Stars with Borders #1 and #2 ...working on Border #2 2/8/15

Tell It To The Stars with Borders #1 and #2
…working on Border #3
2/8/15

I finished borders #1 and #2 and I’m currently on Border #3.  I think there are 2 more borders (#4 and #5).  So I’m hoping to get this done in the next week or two, get the backing put together and then put this on the mid-arm to quilt.

The next project that is close to being a finished top is a really old UFO — the first machine pieced item I ever did.  Well, technically, it is a finished top but I don’t like it.  I am going to add a border or two to it because it just doesn’t look finished to me as it is.  I personally think it’s really ugly because I used cheap fabric and I was just learning how to machine piece.  And I was learning from a book because I didn’t have any money to take a class during those days.  But someone I know likes it and so once its done I’ll be gifting it out of my house!

So for the last couple of weeks’ stash report, I finally finished Flowers and Baskets and that is about 5.5 yards.  I also did the Manhattan Bag and that is about 1.25 yards. So total used 6.75 in the last 2 weeks and nothing added.  Woohoo!

Used this week: -6.75 yards
Used year to Date: -14.25 yards
Added this week: 0 yards
Added Year to Date: 20.25 yards
Net Added for 2015: 6 yards

WIP Status:

 1. Tell It To The Stars – I’m working on putting border #1 on.  I’ve got the sides and need to do the top and the bottom pieces.  I find it weird that the sides are 2-1/4″ while the top and bottoms are 1-1/2″.  Why would the top and bottoms be a different size?  I don’t know but I would guess that it would look appealing.  I am holding my breath and I keep re-reading the instructions to make sure I just didn’t read it wrong.  ;0

Tomorrow, the girl is being interviewed at one of the high schools she’s applying for.  Then I’ll be driving down to OC to get something special from a fellow blogger.  I don’t want to spoil any surprises so you’ll just have to wait until the dust settles. ;0  Just know that I’ll be whooping on my way home!

Happy Quilting everyone!

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

Tell It To The Stars October 5, 2014

Tell It To The Stars
October 5, 2014

Sorry it’s been awhile.  I lost my quilty mojo for a bit.  With Flowers and Baskets finished, I wanted to do a small project before I started my next big quilt, Tell It To The Stars.  I picked the Manhattan bag but it took twice as long as I wanted to spend on it.  I was hesitant to start the project because it was the first time I did that bag and I knew it would take me longer than usual.  I do like the bag and I plan to make more.  Now that that is done, I played with my secret project a bit.  I’m not loving the design so I keep moving fabric around.  It’s better tonight but I found more fabric online that I feel would complement it better than some of the fabric I’ve got on the design wall.  So, I’m waiting for the fabric to come in.

And with that, I pulled out Tell It To The Stars, my sewing table was clean and I had no more excuses.  I’m on the last clue – the border part.  I’ve pulled out the instructions a number of times but I couldn’t bring myself to do anything.  This time, I did.  Can you believe the top pictured above was from October, 2014?  And the last thing I did for this quilt was the November clue, which was part of Border #3…

Tell It To The Stars 32 blocks from the November Clue 11/9/14

Tell It To The Stars
32 blocks from the November Clue
11/9/14

There are 4 additional borders I need to cut and attach to the top.  I cut border #4 tonight.  I’ll be cutting the other borders over the next few nights.  I’ve got until 2/10/15 to work on this project because once the next clue for Scrapitude comes out I will be setting aside Tell It To The Stars again!

What is on your WIP Wednesday?

And for a piece of my non-quilty life, which is another big reason why nothing has been done – a friend of ours built my hubby’s new computer and it wasn’t working.  We couldn’t figure out what was going wrong.  I didn’t have to do anything but I did keep our friends company while they were doing this huge favor of building this new computer.  That took up the bulk of last week.  Saturday, the girl had to take a HS exam for one of the schools she is applying to.  Afterwards, we drove to Vegas for a quick getaway.  What’s a girl to do? We had a voucher for a free room that expires this week so we didn’t want to waste it.  It was a fun, quick trip.  Initially I was going to go to a quilt shop to do some damage to my stash report but I refrained from going.  There are reasons why I refrained but I’ll keep it a secret until I’m able to tell it.  Before you get the wrong idea, it isn’t because I was being good… The hubby’s computer did get fixed and is now running properly.

WIP Status:

 1. Manhattan Bag –

Manhattan Bag 1/30/15

Manhattan Bag
1/30/15

It’s practically done.  I still need a button in the front and a magnetic button inside to keep it closed but I can use it now and no one would be wiser.   I like it but I think there are a few tweaks that need to be done.  I do not like the inside pocket… I think I read the instructions wrong or I misunderstood but the inside pocket has the wrong side of the fabric facing out.  🙁  Also the inside lining seems a bit big which makes the bag a little bulky.  I am planning on doing this bag again and I think making the lining a little smaller than the outside would smooth out the inside part.  I think one of the free Craftsy bag classes talked about that.

I haven’t done anything on Tell It To The Stars. But I’ve got the final fabric pieces for my secret project and materials for a new bag keep arriving from online shops.  Woohoo!  I will not be able to play with it this weekend because the family is going to Vegas this weekend!  Whoop Whoop!!!!  It’s going to be a quick trip to get away and I plan on hitting a quilt shop or two tomorrow.  So stay tuned for Sunday Stash!

Happy Quilting everyone!

For Design Wall Monday…

It’s still a secret so here is a picture of more things I bought at Road2CA.

Bloc Loc Rulers HST Set #1 1/24/2015

Bloc Loc Rulers
HST Set #1
purchased at Road2CA 1/24/2015

I’ve been wanting these forever!  Well since PIQF 2013.  I bought the 6.5″ HST ruler at the time and was mad at myself for not getting the whole set.  Well, I’ve realized since that I love the one I had originally purchased and life would be so much easier if I bought the other sizes so I don’t have to keep moving the ruler up and down my smaller HSTs. My challenge now is that it doesn’t fit in my current ruler holder (I can’t fit any more rulers in their) and I need a system where I won’t lose the small 1.5″ ruler.  Any ideas? In the meantime, I need to update my wish list

Grommets for more bags! purchased at Road2CA 1/24/2015

I also bought grommets to make more bags… Do you think I’m starting a new phase in my life?  Last year I was knitting, this year I’m trying to make bags.  Hopefully I’ll find use for these.  I think so based on the number of bag projects I want to do.

WIPs Be Gone

WIP Status:

 1. Flowers and Baskets – Finished quilting two of the four borders. I probably would have gotten more done but I ran out of bobbin thread.  I’ll try to get the other two borders done tonight.  I noticed that I run out of steam after one border so I’ll be pushing myself.  But I want to get this baby done so I can work on Tell It To The Stars next.  I did go through my drawer where Flowers and Baskets was hiding before I pulled it out to quilt and I have fabric.  It’s the same fabric as the border.  I think this was just left over fabric.  I was going to use it as my binding but I don’t think I’ll like it.  Since the quilt is already off the machine, I think I’ll take it to the LQS to get fabric for the binding.  This quilt was a BOM a couple of years ago (okay more like 4) so I’m sure they would love to see the almost finished project.

Road to California in Ontario is this week.  I wanted to attend classes and workshops like I did at PIQF in 2013 but I still have a bunch of UFOs from the classes I attended then.  So I held off.  I can always go to PIQF this year if I wanted to, or go to Road to CA next year.  So I am not attending classes.  But I want to check out the quilts and visit the vendors to see what’s new. So that’s tomorrow!  I’m super excited about it.  Unlike PIQF and the Long Beach Quilt Show, I will not be buying kits.  I’ve got a bunch of kits that is still waiting for me to get to.  I will be looking for tools, stuff for bag-making, batting, and if I happen to find fabric I love – then fabric.  I generally do not buy fabric at shows because I get overwhelmed with the selection but I have an idea now of what my two LQS generally have and what they do not have so I think I have more of a discerning eye this time around.  We’ll see.  I have to keep in mind that in a few months, we’ll be having our SoCal Shop Hop and I know I’ll be buying fabric and things there too so unlike previous shows I’ve been to, I’m not there just to buy whatever takes my fancy!

Happy Quilting everyone!
