Cross Stitch, My weekly update

Progress!  I was able to spend some time this week on my project and I’m happy with the progress I’ve made so far.  I’ve learned a few things too…

  1. when finishing up a string, don’t trim it so close to the project.  They tend to pop out over time.
  2. bury the ends when you are done with the string and then trim.  that way the back looks nice and clean and the threads don’t pop out from the front.  (too late for this project)
  3. just keep going, one floss at a time.

Here’s what it looked like last time the picture came through:

I finished the embroidering the details on the left side and the letter “E” in Welcome.  Next step is to get the right border completed and work on the details of the right side.

Cross Stitch, My weekly update

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post.  That is life. And in reviewing the last time I posted I realized that my picture didn’t come out.  Not sure how I missed that but hopefully it works this time.

I started working on the details and embroidering the defining lines of the flowers and such. I’m hoping that by doing a bit here and there while I’m still doing the cross stitching will get some of it done when I’m finished with the cross stitching.  It helps break up the monotony for me. 🙂

Now that the bottom right corner is complete, my next mini-goal is to work on the “E”.   I’ve slowed down significantly over the past few weeks as my crafty time is a lot less than before.  I have to be real mindful about making sure I have some crafty time and to utilize it as much as possible.  Now that the sewing room is much more organized I spend less time climbing over things and avoiding the sewing room.

Cross Stitch, My weekly update

I’m becoming more regular with posting an update on my cross stitch.  I like it and keeps my engaged with the project.

Once all the cross stitch is done, I’ll be doing the embroidery part.  I don’t consider it embroidery but I don’t know what else to call it.  I have to outline the letters and add the details on the flowers, etc.  I did it for the left half but haven’t done anything on the right half.  I may start doing some of it now so that I don’t have to do a lot of it once I’m done with cross stitch.  Once it is completely done, should I wash the project?  I know I’m going to try to get the stain off at the bottom (that you can’t see).  But I was wondering if it’s normally done for cross stitch projects.  I’ve finished 2 cross stitch projects in my life.  My first one, I gave to my Aunt.  She had it framed and when I bought my first house, she gave it back to me to put in the house.  I don’t know if she washed it before she had it framed but I don’t think so.  The second one, I have in the main restroom and I had it framed.  I know for a fact I didn’t wash it and I wish every day that I did something to it.  I’ll have to post a picture one day and discuss it.  Anyway, does one wash a cross stitch project (assuming nothing is wrong with it and it’s not dirty)?  I would guess no since you wouldn’t want any of the colors to bleed and cause a mess.  Why fix something that’s not broken.  But just checking with you.

Thanks Maia for the instructions on how to clean the weird looking stuff on my project.  I still can’t bring myself to take a picture.  I haven’t yet tried to do anything with it.  Is there any rush?  Once I’m done I’ll work on getting it cleaned up.

I have discoloration on the weave.  It’s been so long.  It’s very pronounce and I haven’t taken a picture of it.  It’s big, brown/orange, and ugly.  I’m afraid that the whole thing will need to be thrown out.  Anyway, It’s far enough away from the project that I figure once I’m done, I’ll just trim down and frame it so the discolored part will never be an issue.  It’s partially why I want this done pretty quickly.  Today, I decided to lay out the situation and maybe someone can respond with info on what I should do.  Thanks for your help. 🙂  Maybe next week I’ll have the courage to take a picture of it.

…A close up of my work.  Sometimes I don’t feel like using a hoop but lately, especially with the blue plastic hoop I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been using it more regularly.  I think it’s because it’s so easy to move the hoop when I need to.

Stash Report – Week 1, 2016

What a way to start the first report of the year!  Nothing used, Nothing added!  Woot woot!

Used this week: 0 yards

Used year to Date: 0 yards
Added this week: 0 yards
Added Year to Date: 0 yards
Net Added for 2016: 0 yards

As part of my 2016 goals, I want to start tracking my hobby spending.  I’ve set the budget for the year at $3,000 and I’ve allocated a bit for sewing machine servicing, spending money at Road, spending money at QuiltCon and a monthly allowance for bits and things.  I’m not looking to add fabric this year as I want to shop my stash first.  But I know that I’ll need some backing as I finish tops up.  I already have backing for the next 3 quilts so I’ll not need that for awhile unless I start quilting up a storm.  I know there are some things I want to get – inktense pens, for example, and creative grid rulers.  But I don’t NEED anything.  I also know myself and once I get to those shows, I’d want to buy.  So, best to set my budget now and be realistic.

Hobby Budget Report

Spent this week: $0

Spent year to date: $0

And Judy at Patchwork Times  added the yarn report to the sunday stash so I’ll add a yarn report as well.  I’m not a prolific knitter like Judy but lately I’ve been knitting a bit here and there while I watch basketball games with the hubby.  I do have a bit of a yarn stash and I want to use them up before I start buying more.  Nothing added and Nothing used so far.  I’m working on my Rosie hat and that should be finished soon as long as I work on it.  I only do 2 rounds at a time when I do work on it so it takes me a long time. 🙂

Yarn Report:

Used this week: 0 yards

Used year to Date: 0 yards
Added this week: 0 yards
Added Year to Date: 0 yards
Net Added for 2016: 0 yards

And for Slow Stitching Sunday with Kathy at Kathy Quilts, I’m going to continue working on Raining Cats and Dogs.  I worked a bit on the cat yesterday but failed to take a picture.  I hope to have enough energy and time to finish the cat.  Here’s a pic before I started working on the final cat.

I’ll also get some more stitching done on my Cross Stitch “welcome” project.

And afterwards, I will get more of the quilting done on Tell It To The Stars.  I’m working on the orange parts today and I hope to get all those orange parts done.

I’ve been cheating on quilting!  For some reason, earlier this week I had the urge to take out my old cross stitch project.

IMG_8765

And I worked a bit on it until my life took over and no craftiness was done at all.  By old, I started working on this project before my daughter was born.  If you want a date – March 1999.  I know because it was when my Grandmother passed away and my family and cousins trekked it over to the Philippines to send her off.  It was a wonderful trip with the family even if it was for sad reasons.  My Grandmother was the sewist in the family.  She worked for Northface in the 70’s and that’s how she got the industrial Juki that I inherited.  She and I used to hang out in our sunroom.  She would sew stuff (curtains, clothes, pillowcases, our hula outfits) while I did homework, or watched TV, etc.  She actually showed me how to use the sewing machine and I tried to make doll clothes and other stuff.  Anyway, before she passed away she came back to visit and she was cross stitching.  She started me on the cross stitching phase.  I did most of the work on this project the first couple of years and then I put it away and I do not remember the last time I touched it.  But right now this is what it catching my fancy and I’ve been making slow progress on it.

I haven’t touched Razzle at all since this weekend when I discovered the issue with the new fabric and laid out the top as I’d like it to eventually be.  It’s sitting by my sewing machine waiting for me to play with it.  I’m still mad at the whole fabric thing so every time I look at it I get a little irritated.  I know! I shouldn’t take it out on the top because it isn’t its fault.  ;0  I plan to work on it this weekend at the Sew In tomorrow.

In the meantime, happy Friday everyone!  Tonight I’ll be watching a play at the girls school and I’m sick.  I feel a little better than yesterday but after last night’s lost (Clipper v. Warrior game), I’m under the weather! ;0
