Monday Madness – 11/23/2015

I am feeling so much better today!  Thank you everyone for all of your warm wishes. 🙂

I pulled out Missing Ivy to work on this week!

Of all my projects currently in rotation, I’m most excited about Missing Ivy.  It’s coming together really nice and I’m loving the colors and the coordination.  I haven’t yet looked at what the next steps are this week but I have a feeling they are the triangles to fill in the quilt.

I cut more scraps for Scrapitude 2016.  I actually finished cutting for all the medium to dark pieces.  I pulled out my lights from bin #3 and need to separate between lights and very lights.  Then I’ll start cutting.  I know Bonnie Hunter’s mystery starts this Friday but I haven’t gotten my fabric together and I’m still not sure what I’m going to do.  I have a feeling I’ll be heading to my LQS on Wednesday afternoon to grab something because I want to play with everyone.  We’ll see.

I’ll be working on the leaves next for Raining Cats and Dogs and then I’ll be getting the kitties on.  In case you’re wondering why it takes me forever on these, I’m actually hand appliqueing everything.  (you know, needleturn…)  And I have the patience of a fly.  I can only do 1-2 strings of thread at a time.  But that little bit of progress is enough for me right now.

And if you’re coming back from last Monday, just a quick update on Razzle – Over the weekend, I pieced the blocks and sashes together to make 4 separate rows.  Then I went to put together the cornerstones (not part of the pic) with the sashing and discovered that I miscut them. So… sheesh, I feel like every time I get ready to go to the next step in one project I discover something that is messed up or wrong – sometimes it’s something I did like in this case but other times its the kit or the pattern.  It’s good that none of these are Christmas presents and I’m just quilting for the joy of quilting.

For Razzle – I was able to finish piecing the blocks into rows.  Of course, I put it away before getting a good picture of it.  I got started on piecing the cornerstones with the sashes when I realized that I miscut them.  They’re supposed to be 3.5″ square but they’re not 3.5″ squares.  So, I will need to recut the next time this project comes into rotation.

The next project I need to pull out is Missing Ivy.  I will be going to the Clipper game today so I will not be able to get anything done today.  But this is the project I’ll be working on this week. The plan is to continue quilting on Tell It To The Stars.

This Weekend’s Laundry List

I couldn’t wait for the weekend to come quick enough.  This week I was sick and my Clippers lost and wow! were we busy!  I was off my game.  I missed my gratitude post too many times to count.  But now it’s the weekend.  I still have a lot to do but I have time and I’m feeling better but not 100%.  The goal is that by Monday, I’m back to my normal self and I can get back to my regular regime.

Today I’m off to the SFVMQG Sew In at my favorite LQS.  But first, I’ve got to get some studying done.

At the sew in, here’s my list for today:

  • Raining Cats and Dogs

I’ve been cheating on quilting!  For some reason, earlier this week I had the urge to take out my old cross stitch project.

IMG_8765

And I worked a bit on it until my life took over and no craftiness was done at all.  By old, I started working on this project before my daughter was born.  If you want a date – March 1999.  I know because it was when my Grandmother passed away and my family and cousins trekked it over to the Philippines to send her off.  It was a wonderful trip with the family even if it was for sad reasons.  My Grandmother was the sewist in the family.  She worked for Northface in the 70’s and that’s how she got the industrial Juki that I inherited.  She and I used to hang out in our sunroom.  She would sew stuff (curtains, clothes, pillowcases, our hula outfits) while I did homework, or watched TV, etc.  She actually showed me how to use the sewing machine and I tried to make doll clothes and other stuff.  Anyway, before she passed away she came back to visit and she was cross stitching.  She started me on the cross stitching phase.  I did most of the work on this project the first couple of years and then I put it away and I do not remember the last time I touched it.  But right now this is what it catching my fancy and I’ve been making slow progress on it.

I haven’t touched Razzle at all since this weekend when I discovered the issue with the new fabric and laid out the top as I’d like it to eventually be.  It’s sitting by my sewing machine waiting for me to play with it.  I’m still mad at the whole fabric thing so every time I look at it I get a little irritated.  I know! I shouldn’t take it out on the top because it isn’t its fault.  ;0  I plan to work on it this weekend at the Sew In tomorrow.

In the meantime, happy Friday everyone!  Tonight I’ll be watching a play at the girls school and I’m sick.  I feel a little better than yesterday but after last night’s lost (Clipper v. Warrior game), I’m under the weather! ;0

Monday Madness – 11/16/2015

I made a lot of progress yesterday but nothing really finished.  For Tell It To The Stars, I’m quilting the background first and have gone through two passes on the frame.  I’m actually drawing guide lines to help me make sure I don’t get stuck anywhere.  I’m not yet sure about the middle of the stars though.  I’m going to go back and finish those off once the background is done.  I was wondering if that’s how people do it or do they do thread changes before moving the quilt up the frame.  Let me know how you do it?  This is my first time changing threads and I may end up regretting it later.  For now, it’s an experiment and we’ll see how it turns out.

I cut more scraps for Scrapitude 2016.  I actually went through all my #3 scrap bin and cut all the darks that were large enough.  But I still need more darks.  So I went to bin #4 and pulled out more darks.  These are scraps that were larger than a 5×7 and smaller than a yard.  I pulled a lot of darks so there will be a good sampling in the quilt.

I finished the stem in Raining Cats and Dogs and prepped the next piece.

And finally I pulled out Razzle – this week’s project.  I’m really disappointed.  The white corduroy I bought didn’t match the white corduroy of the quilt.  So now I’ve got a yard of corduroy that I can’t use.  At least not for this project.  Rather than try to get another yard of white corduroy to match, I decided to just make the quilt smaller.  So I’m going to have 4 rows of blocks.  I lined them all nice on my design floor:

As you can see, the sashing isn’t pressed so I went and pressed them.  This week, I’ll be putting the blocks together.

Stash Report – Week 46, 2015

First, the stash report!  Went to my LQS this past week and got yardage for that final side of border #2 of Hampton Ridge.  I know I got way too much at +4 yards.  But I didn’t want to cut and piece the border.  Even with that info, I’m sure 4 yards is way too much but I needed at least 3 yards.  So I played it safe.  Not a big deal.  Now I’ll have plenty of dark fabric to add to my  stash!

I know, the lighting is horrible but by the time I got around to taking a picture, the lighting outside wasn’t much better.  Anyway, if you can see the needle to right of the arrow, the remaining part to applique down is from that needle to the end of the stem towards the left. The plan is to get to that today so that next weekend I can move on to the next bit.

For Celtic Solstice, I was able to get the three rows of Block A put together.  Now I get to pack it up and set it aside for next month.  I realized while I was working on these that it took forever because I was trimming dog ears and then piecing.  For that middle row, I was also pinning to try and get those points to match up with the middle of those 4 patches.

And I was able to get Tell It To The Stars onto the frame.

Yesterday was very productive in my house.

Today, I’ve got a lot more running around.  The girl is cheering at her school’s open house so I’ve got to wake her up soon to get ready and go.  The boy’s harvest festival is today too.  But he is not interested in going and we heard that it is supposed to rain today.  If that’s the case, he will definitely not want to go out.  I’ve got yoga shortly and more studying.  I also still want to go to that store where I’ve got a coupon at (it expires today!).

Here’s my quilty plan of action:

  • Continue to work a bit on Raining Cats and Dogs.
  • Start the quilting on Tell It To The Stars on it.
  • Cut for Scrapitude 2016.
  • Pull Razzle out and get going on that project for this week.

I’m still uncertain about joining Bonnie Hunter’s mystery.  I know last week I said I was going to and now this week I’m not sure again.  I started pulling fabrics from my stash and I’m not sure I’ve got enough of the colors she chose.  I’m waffling, I know, but I love the community around the mysteries each year.  That’s the best part.  I just don’t think I’ve got the time. Well, we’ll see how I feel  on Black Friday.

Stash Report – Week 43, 2015

First, the stash report!  Nothing added, nothing finished…

Added this week: 0 yards
Added Year to Date: 90.08 yards
Net Added for 2015: 42.58 yards

I wasn’t able to get the next piece of Raining Cats and Dogs applique’d but I did progress nicely.  I have this handy tool called Bias Bars that I got some time ago for a BOM with my LQS.

IMG_8457

The purpose is to create the thin lines known in Celtic patterned quilts.  I haven’t done one of those but it would be nice to one day.  Anyway, the first item to applique was the thin stem of a flower and I felt that the Bias Bars was a perfect tool to use for that.  So it took some time to put together.  It worked perfectly.  Since I knew that I wouldn’t have the time to actually applique the stem down, I decided to finish marking up all the pieces on the necessary fabrics for the rest of this block.  That part is done, now no more excuses for me… all I’ve got is to applique the rest of the pieces. 🙂

Weekend Line Up

Razzle has been the project of the week and I finished piecing the last strip of white corduroy onto the parts I’m putting together.

Razzle Strips 25 done

25 done

Well, I do not have enough of these finished strips.  I need about 50 and I’m about 10 shy of 50.  I kept thinking that I must have counted wrong and triple counted everything over again.  And each time, I ended up with 40 completed strips.  I have about 10 half way done.  There was not enough white corduroy included in the kit originally.

Thank goodness that I have the ability to order online and get another yard of white corduroy.  And I discovered this issue at the end of the week, so I can jump on Project #4 a day early and leave Razzle for next month.

The plan for today is to applique the next piece for Raining Cats and Dogs.

Yes, the last time I worked on this was in 2013.  Remember I’m pulling out old UFOs and getting them going again.  I also have Bailey out of the garage and in my living room.  I’m having some technical difficulties on it so I’m not going to do anything with it today.  But I hope to have some time to try to get it to work again tomorrow.  I spent all afternoon on it yesterday and I really want to work with fabric so I’ll be putting off machine work until tomorrow. 🙂

  1. backing for Moon Glow / borders for Hampton Ridge
  2. Block A in for Celtic Solstice
  3. Razzle
  4. Missing Ivy

WIP Wednesday – 10/21/2015

Happy Wednesday!

I’ve set Celtic Solstice aside for a bit.  Step 5 took way too long but it’s done now.  Catching up with my long time UFO, Razzle, in the meantime…

Razzle is made up of corduroy fabric.  I love the fabric.  It’s so fun and soft!  But not so fun to piece with.  There is a LOT of lint and fuzz and I have to clean my sewing machine a lot.

I need 49 of these strips:

I’ll be taking time pressing today and will work on getting the other side of that white strip pieced together to the unit.
