For BOM Away Monday, I am showcasing Block 4 of Hampton Ridge.   I’m really happy to have gotten block 4 finished since I received the November package last Wednesday.  I’m still on schedule and the  plan is  to get one of these blocks done each week (there are 4 blocks per month).   Check out more finished BOMs at

For Design Wall Monday, my wall hasn’t changed much since last week.  I have step 5 of Missing Ivy up in the center along with Block 2 of A Rainbow Garden on the left and the 4 blocks of Hampton Ridge on the right.  A bunch of different things to remind myself of the various projects I’ve got going on right now.  Check out more design walls at Patchwork Times.

We received the first step of Bonnie Hunter’s Celtic Solstice Mystery last Friday and I’ve been working on it all weekend.

I misread the instructions and made 240 Orange triangles instead of 140.  I realized my mistake after I cut it but before I started piecing the blue parts with the orange parts so at least I didn’t have to rip out.  I just have 100 extra orange triangles.  And, I may have to buy more orange fabric to make up for it. 🙁

But I was able to also cut the 240 Neutral (white) triangles…

And today, I was able to finish piecing the 140 orange/blue sets. But I was only able to do 77 white/blue sets.  I’ll be doing a little bit tomorrow and Tuesday but I’ll be travelling to LA on Wednesday until Friday, and we’ve got another cheer competition on Saturday so… I do not know how much I’ll be able to do before the next clue.  C’est la vie!  I’ll be doing my best and hoping to stay on top of everything.

At retreat this weekend I was able to get these 4 blocks finished for Missing Ivy (which is Judy Laquidara’s Road to Brenham Pattern).  I started the first step early in September but the project was put aside by Ammabel’s quilt.  I’m really happy with how it is turning out.  Originally I was going for scrappy but I love the fabrics as they are and no longer want to do the scrappy thing.  I know I have enough of the dark blue and marble cyan but I’m not sure of the yellow and I ran out of the white this weekend.  I went online and had a hard time finding it at my normal online shops.  It’s LakeHouse Sweet Things – white on White – Flowers and Circles –

I finally found it and I bought enough to finish Missing Ivy and to use for Celtic Solstice if I choose to.  I found the fabric from Winters Lane that have been out of stock everywhere else too so I’ll have a ton of yardage to add to my stash report.  I can’t wait to get it in the mail.  I’ll be packing up this project this weekend because on Friday this quilt will get set aside again.  This time by Celtic Solstice.  If the first step requires the white fabric I may have to go with the scrappy white that I originally planned.

I also was able to get Block 3 of Hampton Ridge finished on Friday – day one of the retreat.  I’m still on track with this BOM because I haven’t received the November Package yet.  I am getting better at matching those points.  I didn’t match them very well in Block 1 and Block 2 was better but still not great.  I feel really good with Block 3 and it went together fairly easily.  I could have gotten it done quicker on Friday if I wasn’t bombarded with as many interruptions as I had.  But it was what it was and I’m happy with how it turned out.

I finished this yesterday just in time to post this for today’s BOM Away Monday.

Here’s a close up.  I received the November kit last Friday so I’m only behind 1 month.  Hopefully I can get the October block together enough to bring to retreat this coming weekend.  It would be nice to get some pointers on how I’m doing on this project.

The design wall hasn’t changed so here’s the picture from last week.  At some point, I’ll be putting these blocks away while I work on Block 2 of Raining Cats and Dogs.  I’m not yet sure what I’ll put up there to replace these.  Probably the current BOMs in progress but if I get a lot of work done on Missing Ivy at the retreat – I may put that up there for inspiration.

Block 6 of Raining Cats and Dogs finished early this month as planned as I worked on this all last week while out of town.  The rest of my projects took a break and I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things.

I decided to pull out all my finished blocks for Raining Cats and Dogs and put it on the wall to check it out.  The blocks are not placed in their respective spots in the finished quilt.  I just put them up on the wall wherever they fit.  There are only two more blocks left and I’m excited to be at this point.  This quilt has been hand project #2 for so long I’m happy to be done with it.

Monday Monday – 11/4/2013

Design Wall & BOM Away Monday

I’m linking to both Design Wall Monday and BOM Away Monday.  Because that’s where I link to on Monday’s now.  But my design wall today looks the same as last week and I have no new finished BOMs.  No excuses but I used all of last week’s free time to finish Ammabel’s quilt and this weekend was basically a no-sew weekend due to her birthday party and Kayla’s Cheer competition.  I did’t get very good pictures or video so I’m sad about that.  It’s the first competition of the year with her new team so it didn’t go so well.  It can only get better from this point though.  And they know what they need to work on and will continue to practice to clean up the act for the next competition next month.  I really only have a little left to do with Rainbow Garden and I originally planned to do it yesterday after the comp.  But I was just too pooped yesterday.  It took a full 2 hours to get home with all the traffic due to road constructions so I didn’t get back until 6:30.   I did get some of the Hawaiian quilt done from my PIQF class during the competition.  It’s an easy hand project to take with me and work on between squads.  So – I’m off to LA this afternoon and I’m taking Raining Cats and Dogs to get work done on Block 6!

Sorry I haven’t had time to check out everyone else’s posts these last few days.  I’ll continue to be AWOL for this week but plan to see me back online with a vengeance when I return next week.

I finally have a REAL design wall!

But what I’m really happy and excited about are the wonderful changes my daddy made to my sewing room/office.

The wall is up!

I brought this with me from Los Angeles but I didn’t think I had the room for it.  I really do not but this room has french doors and what you do not see is that the left side of the “wall” covers the right door.  I originally didn’t want to cover it.  But I wasn’t using the door but once in a while when I needed to move things in and out.  With the design wall, I can always remove it when I want to open the right door.

And that’s not the only thing my daddy put up!  He slapped some nails down and now I have a couple of places to hang my rulers.

I’ve still got the cork board I made a few months ago.  I just moved it to the right side of my desk.  You can’t tell in the picture as it just looks like every other picture I’ve taken of it.  But trust me, it’s on the right and it was moved. 🙂

I’ve got an unfinished block from Lucky Star BOM (January 2013) up there as well.  I’m working on that one a bit at a time it seems.  By the time I get to that block I’m at the end of my quilty time and I have just enough steam left to just do one of the parts.  I have a few more days to finish it before the end of the month so there’s no rush.  Really there is no rush at all.  It’s not like I need to have anything done by a certain time.  No one needs any of the quilts I make as soon as possible.  Obviously that’s different if I’m making a gift that has a deadline.  Which I haven’t done yet so no worries there.  Some times in the ever need to finish something to add to my blog or reduce my stash I feel a rush to get things done.  Or maybe it’s just the day and age where faster is better.  I have to remind myself to slow down and enjoy the process.  I’ll get done what I can but I want to make quality work, learn as I go and experience the pleasure of quilting – whether it is the sound of my sewing machine or the comfort of hand work.

Here’s a close up.

I wish I had a bigger design wall but I just do not have a spot for it.  So I’m going to have to be happy with my little corkboard.

And just a little rant about Pre-Washing fabric…

When I took my first quilting class, I was told to pre-wash the fabric.  I did so without question.  When I took my second quilting class, I pre-washed since that was what I did before.  But at that class, the instructor (a different one from the first) told me that some people did and some people didn’t.  The more traditional (older) quilters (as my first instructor was) did because older fabric wasn’t as good as the fabric is now.  I’m pretty sure that the instructor didn’t say it that way but that was how I took it.  She probably gave me more specifics about how the fabric was made then and dye used etc but it all went over my head and the only thing I got from it was that I didn’t have to if I didn’t want to.  So I didn’t.  Thinking back and knowing both instructors better now, she probably didn’t mean that I shouldn’t do one or the other but her way of saying that there is an on-going debate about whether to pre-wash or not.  And that it depends on what I wanted to do.  Well, I decided then that if I didn’t have to pre-wash then I wouldn’t and I didn’t.  Well I recently finished a quilt that I hadn’t pre-washed and my colors bled.  Luckily it bled evenly and the quilt doesn’t look bad.  In fact, if I didn’t point it out, no one would know.  But I know how the quilt is supposed to look and I’m irritated with myself for not pre-washing.  So now I’m on the pre-washing bandwagon.  I’ve still got a few quilts in the making (all those UFOs) that I didn’t pre-wash the fabric and I’m scared as to what might happen when I wash the finished quilts.  But there is nothing I can do with that now and I’ll just keep going on with those come what may.  However, going forward, I’m washing all my fabric.

Okay so I’m combining two posts into one.  It just so happens that my design wall this morning happens to include the finished 12.5″ practice block for my Lucky Star BOM. I’m still not happy with all the bulk that comes with foundation paper piecing.  However, the 12.5″ block didn’t have as much bulk as the 6″ version.  I did force some of the fabric to turn in opposite directions to minimize the bulk and help keep the points aligned.  I’m not sure if the instructions originally told me to do this or not but I did not do it with the smaller version and my points were not even close.  The larger version had most of my points matching so I’m happier with the larger one.  I think for future blocks I should start with the larger version.

I’m sick and my design wall shows it!

I’m sick!  I thought I was getting over it last week but this weekend’s adventures just made it worse!  I hope I didn’t get anyone else sick. 🙁

You can’t tell by the design wall but I made significant progress on Raining Cats and Dogs – almost half of the little pieces have been appliqued down on block 9.  It helped that I spent most of the weekend out of the house at a family reunion and my nephew’s birthday party.  This meant that I took my hand work with me to work on during my down time and I got a lot of it done. 🙂 Good news considering I’m now going back to bed.
