I finally have a REAL design wall!

Design Wall & BOM Away Monday

First, I’m linking to both Design Wall Monday and BOM Away Monday.  My design wall includes the finished Block 2 of the Hampton Ridge BOM that I finished early last week.

But what I’m really happy and excited about are the wonderful changes my daddy made to my sewing room/office.

The wall is up!

I brought this with me from Los Angeles but I didn’t think I had the room for it.  I really do not but this room has french doors and what you do not see is that the left side of the “wall” covers the right door.  I originally didn’t want to cover it.  But I wasn’t using the door but once in a while when I needed to move things in and out.  With the design wall, I can always remove it when I want to open the right door.

And that’s not the only thing my daddy put up!  He slapped some nails down and now I have a couple of places to hang my rulers.

I’ve still got the cork board I made a few months ago.  I just moved it to the right side of my desk.  You can’t tell in the picture as it just looks like every other picture I’ve taken of it.  But trust me, it’s on the right and it was moved. 🙂

And the cork board was moved to a different space. My lucky star BOM is still unfinished there.

The Lucky Star BOM is still unfinished as I wasn’t able to get much sewing done yesterday.

I’ve got an unfinished block from Lucky Star BOM (January 2013) up there as well.  I’m working on that one a bit at a time it seems.  By the time I get to that block I’m at the end of my quilty time and I have just enough steam left to just do one of the parts.  I have a few more days to finish it before the end of the month so there’s no rush.  Really there is no rush at all.  It’s not like I need to have anything done by a certain time.  No one needs any of the quilts I make as soon as possible.  Obviously that’s different if I’m making a gift that has a deadline.  Which I haven’t done yet so no worries there.  Some times in the ever need to finish something to add to my blog or reduce my stash I feel a rush to get things done.  Or maybe it’s just the day and age where faster is better.  I have to remind myself to slow down and enjoy the process.  I’ll get done what I can but I want to make quality work, learn as I go and experience the pleasure of quilting – whether it is the sound of my sewing machine or the comfort of hand work.

Luck Stars BOM – Practice Block

Lucky Star BOM Practice Block

Practice Block

As you can see, my points aren’t matching. Elizabeth’s instructions were great!  I just have a hard time with all the bulk of fabric that accumulates.  Have you had any issues with bulk?  I can’t help but think that it’s going to be a mess to quilt over some of those spots?  If you’ve had experience doing this – do you just skip those spots when quilting or is there a trick?  Am I the only one that has all this bulk?  Should I be snipping more of the excess fabric?  I try to keep it at 1/4″ but sheesh.. it still is really thick.  This is the 6.5″ block.  I wonder if the bulk will go away when I do the 12.5″ block.  I’ll try and let you know how it goes.

Still need to baste 7 items

Design board #1 – Is the current status of Block 9.  My goal for last week was to get these all basted down but I wasn’t able to do it.  So I will try to get these done this week.  Here’s a secret – this is right by my work desk so when I’m on a long conference call that doesn’t require a whole lot of work other than me listening – well, I take this baby down and work on this a little.  Don’t tell anyone, okay? It’s just between you and me. 😉

Design Board #2 – I haven’t posted this board in a while mainly because it hadn’t changed until now.  The last (and first) time I posted this board was when I made it.  I pinned an old block that I did years ago when I tried foundation paper piecing.  Until this past weekend I didn’t do anymore with foundation paper piecing.  The bottom block is my second attempt ever with foundation paper piecing and is the practice block from the Lucky Stars BOM. You can see info on the Lucky Stars BOM page to get all the details of it.  But here’s my first attempt with the Practice Block.  This is the 6 1/2″ block.  I had some trouble with it… It was much easier this time around with Elizabeth’s detailed instructions than the first attempt with Foundation Piecing.  I’ll discuss my issues at another post as I’m simply taking a break from work to join the Design Wall linky today. 🙂
