Sunday Stash Report – Week 11, 2021

Back for the orange top 3/14/2021

Happy Pi Day!

My main goal for quilting was to get the back ready for my Orange quilt top. I did it!

Orange Quilt Top Quilt #2 – to be quilted 3/7/2021

I showed this last week and it doesn’t hurt to show it again. I also made a disclaimer. I didn’t piece this top together. I bought it at one of the August treasure hunts my guild does every year (except 2020). It goes to show you never know what you’ll find and what other people may buy/sell. I bought it with the intention to practice my FMQ and I think I’ve had it for 4 years now. A lot has changed in 4 years. But it’s out of my bucket and on the to be quilted stage.

I’m counting the fabric I used for the backing but cannot count the fabric used for the top. I estimate it to be about 3.5 yards. I used stash which is perfect. I pulled a bunch of yellows and oranges out and put them together and started with the yards or so of the lighter yellow. I loved the dark orange and paired it with the yellow batik. Last, the flowery orange and yellow fabric on the left really pulled it all together.

Next week, my goal for this quilt is to prep the batting.

Earlier today, I took a cushion workshop with Becky McDaniel. This first class was really a paper piecing class. I’m the tech person for my guild and was the moderator for the workshop. It was really difficult to both moderate and participate. But it’s done. we have to get all the pieces, pieced, and quilted by our next class in 2 weeks so I’ll be very busy doing that.

I haven’t bought more fabric. Not for want of trying – I just didn’t have the time to head to my LQS this week.

I finished knitting my morning socks. I talked at length about them here and you can find more details on ravelry here. Note – you’ll need a Ravelry account to access the site.

Taffy Toes Sock 3/14/2021

I picked up another sock project but it was already started. According to the ravelry page I have for this project, I started it 12/23/2017. It must have been my Christmas Cast on that year. I knit a handful of rows and then put it aside. It’s out now and I’m finishing the ribbing.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 10, 2021

We had a wonderful time visiting the Blossom Trails near Fresno, CA. We took a lot of great pictures. Here is just one. And I’ll post a more detailed description with more pictures later. For now, it’s Sunday afternoon and I’ve got my Sunday Stash to report.

I made it to Mennonite Quilt Center, a quilt shop in Reedley, CA which is along the Blossom Trail. They have an online shop with aboriginal fabrics if you are so inclined. I purchased 1 yard of fabric and this project bag kit.

ByAnnie “Piecekeepers Project Bag” – Front 3/7/2021
ByAnnie “Piecekeepers Project Bag” – Back 3/7/2021

I purchased more things that I’ve since gifted or put away but I have to count the 1 yard. And since I sewed and finished the project bag this weekend, I need to mark the fabric used. I’m thrilled. I told myself when I purchased it that I had to get it started right away so it wouldn’t be one of the many bag kits I purchased along the years that are still sitting waiting to get done. We don’t need to talk about that. 🙂

In addition to the 1 yard purchased at Reedley, I also bought 2 yards yesterday at my LQS, Quilt Emporium. I’m taking a cushion workshop this month with Becky McDaniel through my quilt guild and I wanted 2 yards of a gray. I have lots of 1 yards of grays but I wanted 2 yards of a gray. I found what I wanted and got it. The workshop consists of 2 classes. The first is next weekend and it will get us started on piecing the project together. The second class is on 3/28 and will talk about putting the cushion together. I’m really excited.

Orange Quilt Top Quilt #2 – to be quilted 3/7/2021

And finally, this is what I’ve been calling the Orange quilt top. I purchased this a few years ago at one of the August Treasure Hunts my guild had with the intent to practice FMQ. It sat a long time. Now it’s time to pull it out. I can’t add the fabric to my “used” numbers because I didn’t make it. But I’ve pulled out some fabric to make the back and that will be fun to do.

Go to more stash reports at QuiltPaintCreate who hosts the Sunday Stash. I’ll be linking up this afternoon.

I finished knitting Water Lily.

Water Lily 3/7/2021

Here’s a not great picture. But will have to do. I’m sorry for the crappy quality and the smudges on my mirror. It’s not finished finished finished but the knitting is all done so I’m counting it in my yarn numbers. I still need to weave in the ends, block it, and take my glamour shots. I love how it turned out. It’s slightly tight in the arm section and a little time in the armpit/boob area but other than that, turned out really nice. I love it and hope to use it often.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 9, 2021

Staycation Finally – a finish! 2/25/2021

It’s done! I’m so happy as it’s the first finished finished finished quilt I’ve had in over a year. The last one was Celtic Solstice and after a brief search discovered I finished that one in Feb, 2019! So it’s been 2 years since I’ve had a quilted, bound, labeled, and WASHED quilt. Yes, I washed this one as soon as I got the label on. I’ve already counted the front and back fabric used but I haven’t yet counted the binding so I’m letting myself count .75 yards used this week.

This post was prepped a few days ago and scheduled to publish today as the hubby and I are off to explore Fresno’s Blooming Trail. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m hoping the flowers on the fruit tree are abundantly blooming.

For yarn:

I am still working on my knitted top, Water Lily.

Water Lily Back 12/20/2020

I still do not have a more recent picture. I finished knitting the front left side and I’m working on knitting the back neck part. I’ve already kitchener stitched the left front and left back together so I’m very very close to a finish. I did a little bit of a try on before I started stitching the front and back together to make sure it all fit right and it did. I’m hoping once I finish getting it all together it still does. One can never tell until it’s all done and blocked. Anyway, this project has been over a year in the making so I’m very excited about this finish. And I am loving how it wears. I’ve not needed to use the extra skein I bought just in caseys so I’ll have plenty to use for a different sweater project.

I can’t call this a finish yet so my numbers remain the same.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 8, 2021

Binding is on but not yet finished Staycation 2/21/2021

This is the last weekend I will have to work on this quilt which means I have through tonight to finish binding. I tried hard to get it done for this post so I can get at least add .75 yards to my used portion but alas, it’s not going to happen. After this post, I’ll be going back to the sewing room to finish it up. Luckily this is one where I will be machine binding to the back (from the front) so it should be a quick finish.

label is on… kind of Staycation 2/21/2021

I even have the label on so once the binding is done, all I have to do is finish applique’ing the 3 open sides and it will be done, done, done! Or as one of my guildmates say, Finish is the best word in the dictionary!

Next weekend, my hubby and I and another couple will be heading up to Fresno to check out the Blooming Trail. So I’ll probably schedule a post to go up (hopefully with Staycation as a finish!)

Not much to post but I’m working and making progress on the various projects I’ve got going.

In summary, it’s a zero used and a zero added — and that, my friends, is great numbers indeed. 🙂

I still do not have a more recent picture. I finished knitting the front ride side and I’m now working on the front left side. This is so close to being finished that when I’m working on it I find it hard to stop. Voolenvine had some great yarn in her update this week.

voolenvine’s yarn: Love Song

But I restrained myself from this purchase. As you can see it was very hard for me to do so. So – I get big kudos for saying no to this beautiful yarn.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 7, 2021

Staycation is quilted. It’s not yet bound or labeled so it’s not a finish. But I think I reached a good step in the process and I could put the front and back in the USED part of my report. Finally. I have so many multiple projects in all kinds of craftiness that finishes are a long time coming.

Staycation Quilted Not Bound 2/13/2021

Don’t look too closely at the quilting. I’m learning how to do ruler work and playing with different designs. My quilts are definitely not perfect and each one is a practice for the next quilt. Perfection is a long way coming but improvement happens all the time. 🙂

I made another mask for the hubby. He was still not happy with the last one so I made a new one and he didn’t like that one either. But, the boy liked it so after a few tucks here and there and a bit of adjustments to the elastic, he has a new mask that he likes. I finally broke down and made the Olson mask for the hubby. He liked the mask but the elastic was too big. So I had to make some adjustments there until it was the right size. A version of the Olson mask was one of the first set of masks I made and I absolutely disliked making them. There was too much cutting and too many pieces that it took forever to finish one. But the hubby was not happy with any of the easy to sew masks that I like making more. And so far it was a success. So in addition to the 2 I made previously and the 2 now, that’s a total of 4 masks, which I estimate to be about 1/2 yards of fabric. So between Staycation and masks, I’ve got 8.5 yards used.

That’s great numbers. 🙂 I didn’t have a chance to post my stash report last week but the week before I warned you that I was joining a new BOM called Simple Days Embroidery BOM and I was buying fabric to go with the look I was trying to achieve. I went to my LQS and managed to buy 10 yards of fabric. Insane. I bought a bunch of Tilda fabrics in the newest line, woodland creatures (I think). I bought fat quarter sets that my LQS had as well as yardage of my favorite, 3 yards of a creamy solid and an extra yard of something I loved that I couldn’t go home without.

Tilda fabric – Woodland Creature … samples
my favorite one.

So, it’s a plus 10.

Water Lily Back 12/20/2020

I do not have a more recent picture but I finished 2 pattern repeats of the back lace and on the front I’ve split for the v-shape and I’m working on the lace on the right side. I’m concerned about running out of yarn. Unfortunately, Voolenvine doesn’t have this base, Lore, anymore so there’s no way to get more. Lore is a luscious base of merino, cashmere and silk. The next best think is Voolenvine’s Wolke base which is made up of merino, cashmere, and nylon. It’s close enough but without the shine of silk. Her last update had this colorway (dragon tears) in her Wolke base so I had to snag one just in case I ran out. And I couldn’t just buy 1. I bought 6. That way I have enough for a cardigan if I wanted to make one. 🙂 Anyway, I’m almost done with this project so I hope to have a finish soon and have something to add to the used numbers.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 5, 2021

I haven’t touched “staycation” since last weekend so no progress there and I haven’t taken any pictures. My Q20 is in my bedroom right next to the sliding glass door. During sunny days that lets great light into the room and I’m able to quilt with no problems. The past week has been rainy and overcast for Southern California so it’s been dark in my room. I’ve been super busy with work and other crafty stuff that by the time I decide to go to my room to quilt, it’s too dark to do anything. I tried. Today, I meant to do it early enough before it got dark. But some other inspiring things happened that meant I was out in the garden during the sunny time of the day. That’s for another post. For now, I’ve got nothing yet for finished yardage.

Last week, I made a mask for my hubby. My intent was to finish more masks so I can claim a yard used. Unfortunately, he wanted me to make more alterations to my mask recipe for him. So I did one more mask for him. He’ll use it this week and hopefully will be happy with it. And next week I can make a few more for him with this new recipe. So I made one mask last week and a second mask this week which is great but not enough to claim a yard used or even a quarter yard used. Maybe a quarter? I’ll just keep these percolating and hopefully soon I’ll be able to make it a yard used. 🙂

Another week with zero used and zero added. But, I am planning to go to my LQS to buy fabric. I joined the Simple Days Embroidery BOM that started this week (Thanks Susan!) and I originally intended to use stash. But last night I was preparing the first block and I had something else in mind and I while I could probably scrounge together the fabric couldn’t scrounge together enough of the background fabric I want. Just a warning that I’ll be having some added fabric next week. At least this is intentional and not on the whim purchases. 🙂

Here’s what it looked like the last time I posted it:

Jimmy Bean Advent Calendar Shawl – 2019 Status as of 12/20/2020

I still need to weave in my ends and block it. But I’m working on the weaving in a bit at a time at my Thursday knit night and once that is done I can block it. This is 900 yards and with fingering skein that’s a little over 2 skeins. I’m just going to round it up to 3 skeins since I would have had to wind 3 skeins. So… 3 skeins used! yay!

Sunday Stash Report – Week 4, 2021

Of course, as soon as I finished Kayla’s masks the dog chewed up my husband’s favorite mask. And while he has other masks he could wear, they just didn’t fit right. So I am back to the drawing board to make him a mask that fits. But I’m not done yet because there’s no rush and my plan is to finish them tonight.

All this to say, I’ve got nothing used and nothing added. Although the whole mask thing with the hubby made me want to go to the LQS to buy some fabric more appropriate for manly masks. Luckily, the thought of getting appropriately dressed and out of the house, was too much effort so I went through a few bins and found black fabric for the outfacing layer and browns and grays for the inner layer. The plan today is to make one to determine the right measurements and then make a handful more for him and my son. With luck, I’ll be able to claim a yard used next week.

In other good news, I added the leaves to my Q20 and put the quilt “staycation” under the needle. My progress is not great and I plan to take more pictures and post them for you over the next week. I only did about an hour yesterday and my plan is to take 15 minutes every day to quilt a bit. I’m learning how to use a ruler and the result is awful. But I’m getting better as I go on and that’s all that matters. So soon, this quilt will be done and I can finally add this to the usage numbers.

Go to more stash reports at QuiltPaintCreate who now hosts the Sunday Stash. I’ll be linking up there this morning.

For yarn:

Last week, I said that I had some finished socks finished but hadn’t taken pictures so I didn’t include them in my used numbers.

Geeky Girl Knits 5th year anniversary sock collection from many years ago
Sock it to me socks

That’s 2 skeins used. I was very close to buying yarn as I received an email from my favorite dyer, Voolenvine, with her weekly update email and the itch to click over to buy was very strong. Luckily, she has a very dedicated following and her shop is generally out of stock 15 minutes after her weekly update. So I have to set an alarm, know exactly what I want and be ready when her update opens. And, I didn’t set that alarm so the update past me by. In addition, I’ve been watching a new to me podcast, The Bearded Purl, and the last few episodes have them going on and on about this yarn that is more natural or rustic than I’m used to buying or wanting to buy. Which is probably why I want it. I don’t have a lot of that rustic stuff and I like to buy things I don’t already have a lot of. But in both cases, I was able to restrain myself. I have a lot of yarn and I do not nearly knit as quickly as some of my friends. So, I need to make a huge dent before I can even think about buying. Just writing this depresses me so I think I’m setting myself up for failure on this end as there is no way I can’t buy yarn. I’ll have to think of a way to make it so that I can still buy yarn but be using more than adding.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 3, 2021

I had a 40% off coupon for one cut of fabric from my LQS that I received when I participated in the 12 days of Christmas event last Fall.  It would have expired last Tuesday, 1/12/2021, if I had not used it. So I did. Whenever there are these great deals, I generally like to buy backing with it. So I bought 7 yards of fabric. I really wanted 10 yards but thought that would be excessive.

I spent the last couple of days making masks for my daughter as she is leaving in a few days to go back to Boston. I don’t like making masks, it’s really no fun but it’s a great use of fabric and once I figured out how she likes them I was able to make 9 masks at once. It’s a little under a yard used so I’m just going to round up to 1 yard. I’ll go into detail on a separate post about these masks.

I also haven’t used or added anything. I have socks that I finished and another pair I started but I still need to take pictures so I won’t mark them here until I’ve done that. I’m still working on my other projects. Work has been very busy so I’ve not been able to knit as much as I’d like during the week. Oh well, things will slow down in a bit and I’m grateful for the work.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 2, 2021

I received a bag of fabric from a friend who is destashing. She’s been destashing for a few years and I’ve been the recipient for a lot of fabric.  Recently – within the last year, one of my knitting friends has expressed desire to learn to quilt. So now whenever I get free fabric I send them her way to help her build her stash.

All of that to say that I have a bag of fabric. One of those pieces is 7 yards so you can imagine how that will impact my stash report.  The good news, I haven’t decided what will stay with me and what I’ll gift on.  So, for now, I’m not adding it to my stash. I hope to get to that this week for next week’s report.

I’m very busy with work so far (as I generally am this time of year) so we’ll see how much I get done.

And at last week’s post, Susan was able to point me to QuiltPaintCreate who now hosts the Sunday Stash. I’ll be linking up there this morning.

Sunday Stash Report – Week 1, 2021

I stopped reporting my stash mid 2018. And I officially stopped in 2019 when I said in the beginning of the year that I was going to stop. And since then, I’ve accumulated fabric and yarn by the bins.

I’ve decide to start reporting my additions and usage again. I’ve been leading to this point. I know that I tend to buy fabric when I’m not quilting as much and the same goes for yarn and any other craft I do. When I can’t craft, I support the habit by buying.

Anyway, I’m doing this again because I want to encourage myself to use up my stash.

This does not mean I cannot buy fabric or yarn but I will report it. I will buy fabric and yarn for these reasons only:

  1. I buy monthly from my LQS to support them and it’s part of my monthly budget. And I only buy yarn from Voolenvine to support her (and I only buy yarn in her Wolke base in a colorway I LOVE).
  2. I buy what I need to do or finish projects I want to do. For example, I’m starting the Orient Express shawl once my Jimmy Bean advent shawl is complete. For that project I needed 4 more skeins and more beads.  I bought what I needed, it arrived and now that project is waiting on me to finish the Jimmy Bean shawl. In quilty land, I tend to buy backing for my quilt tops.
  3. Supplies for a class or workshop. My guild is doing workshops via zoom so as with anything, I look to my stash first. And if I don’t have something I’m looking for, then I go to my LQS to buy something.

So far, for the first few days of 2021, I’ve not used anything nor have I added anything. whew!
