I was convinced last Wednesday that I only needed to spend a couple of hours finishing up the last row of quilting.  Then I could bind and label it.  But when I got started I realized I still needed to finish up the second row before I could quilt the final row.  I only had time to work on it twice this past week but now I only have 1.5 sides to quilt on the final row.  Then I can bind and label it.  I’m in the running but it may be a tight finish with only 2 nights available for me to finish before the end of the quarter. I know there are more days and nights until quarter end but I will not be in town and available to quilt during those times.

This quilt has been a WIP so long, I’m no longer enjoying the fabric and color selection.  These colors were so 2006 for me. 🙂  At this point, I really just want this done.  I’m sure years from now after I stop looking at it as that WIP that just kept WIPPING I’ll fall back in love with it.  But right now – I just want to get it done.

A Finish!  But I can’t show pictures yet.  I will as soon as I can.  Over the next few days I’ll be working on my hand quilt.

I’m convinced I only need a couple of hours to finish hand quilting this baby.  It’s my first quilt ever from 2006 and I’ve been hand quilting it on and off since I finished putting it together in 2007.  I only have 1 or two rows left of the final border, bind it and then add my label.  It’s on my FAL list for this quarter and I’m going to try to get this done so I can say it’s, well, done! 🙂

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things.  I even made it to my guild meeting last night.  It was nice to see everyone again.  I hope to make it to my bee next Thursday but that takes some extra coordination with the hubby since it’s my day to take the girl to cheer practice. Anyway I actually was able to work on something last weekend.

First I did the February clue for Tell It To The Stars.

Then I worked on Part 4 of Celtic Solstice – the picture only shows 100 patches but after this weekend I have 228.  I’m not sure why I’m not closer to the 300 I need other than I think I thought I only needed 244?  I must have gotten the numbers confused with another step.  So I will need to cut more strips and piece more of these.

I worked a bit on Block #3 of A Rainbow Garden – the picture is from a previous quilting day as it was dreary last Sunday which was when I was quilting and was not able to take very good pictures. So it shows the pins but I was able to get the little green leaves, the green stem, and one of the big leaves stitched down with a blank stitch.  I have a lot more to go since all those little pieces need to be placed down too.  I’m about 3 blocks behind on this project because it’s wool and this is my first time doing it and because it’s a hand project.  They always take longer than other projects.  🙂

And happily I’ve started FMQ’ing Easy Street.  I’ve taken a few classes but haven’t actually done my own quilt ever.  It’s really hard and it’s not the perfect quilting.  However, I just needed to get down and dirty with it.  This is my quilt and I’m okay with it not being perfect.  I’ve done most of 1 section and my plan is to work a little bit on it every weeknight that I’m at home.

I’m working on Block #3 of A Rainbow Garden.  All the pieces are cut and ready to be sewn onto the backing.  That’s on tomorrow’s agenda.

Celtic Solstice – Just waiting to find time to work on the rest of those 4-patches for step 4.  I’ve ONLY got 144 left to do. but with 4-patches those should go by fast.  This is this weekend’s agenda with the hope that I’ll be able to start on Step 5 also.

And I finally spent a little time on Monday evening hand quilting My First Ever Hand Quilt – probably should be renamed The Quilt That Never Ends.  I’m on the final side of the 2nd row of the final border.  Then I’ll do a 3rd row and then the binding and the label!  After 8 years, it’s almost done. lol

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

The #1 item on my WIP list (our Family Holiday Newsletter) is officially done!  woohoo!  They are in the mailbox ready for pick up.  The first batch went out yesterday and the rest is going out today.  I’m so glad they are off my list. I haven’t done much quilty-wise since Manic Monday so nothing much to report.  But here goes –

Celtic Solstice – Step 3 is half done and I’m pretty sure I’m not going to get anymore done before the next clue.

Hand quilting – I’m halfway through the second side.  Really not much progress here but I’m okay with that right now.  I just do not want it to fall by the way side.  It is really almost done – just the final border and then binding and a label!

My hand projects – Raining Cats and Dogs – I was able to get a few pieces down over the weekend while waiting for the girl at her knitting class.  But that’s it.  I’ve been trying to touch this project every Monday and that was doable for a few weeks.  This week though has  work taking over every aspect of my life.  That will change shortly though.

A Rainbow Garden.  So I’m still working on the October block.  I just received the December block so now I’m 2 months behind.  I’ll be working on this tomorrow when I take the girl to cheer practice so hopefully I get a lot done.

Next week I’m on a little vacation.  Most of my clients will be on vacation so all my regular conference calls have been cancelled for the next two weeks.  The goal is to only work 2-3 hours a day and then the following week the family and I are going on a little end of the year retreat.  I convinced everyone that instead of gifts this year, we should spend a week in Reno, NV.  Surprisingly, the kids didn’t give me any issues with this idea.  It helps that living where we live, we do not see snow and my son has been wanting to see snow for the last year.  So, the plan is to hang out there for a week.  I’m bringing my sewing machine and a couple of board games.  We’ll spend a day or two at the slopes.  The hubby will hang out at the casinos.  🙂  And hopefully have great memories.

WIP Wednesday – 12/11/2013

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

The #1 item on my WIP list is our Family Holiday Newsletter.  That has to be done ASAP and out the door soon.  I’ve been working on it slowly but can never quite get it done.  I’ve probably got 3 main sections to do so far.  The boy did his the other night and I was able to paste it in his section last night with only a few adjustments. 🙂 The girl is still working on hers and I’m hoping to get hers done tonight along with the others.  If I could get it done and to the printers by Friday I’ll be happy.

Celtic Solstice – I was able to  piece together 6 sets of Step 2.  No where near what I need to get done and I’m pretty sure I will not have that step finished by Friday.  It’s the drawing the line part that is slowing me down!  Well, I’ll do what I can and on Friday I’ll start Step 3.

Hand quilting – I’m a third of the way through the second side.  This is my TV project and haven’t been watching that much lately.  I do plan on watching the classic Christmas shows so I’ll be working on the quilting when the family gets the chance to do that.

Tomorrow is my turn to take the girl to cheer practice so I’ll be working a bunch on my hand project – Raining Cats and Dogs and A Rainbow Garden.  I haven’t taken her in awhile so I’m looking forward to hanging out at Starbucks with my audiobook and my hand projects. 🙂

WIP Wednesday – 12/4/2013

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

So I’m off to LA this morning and over the next few days I’ll be working hard.  I’ve brought my hand work with me and I hope I’m able to fit a bit of hand applique in.  Outside of working, I plan to eat at all my favorite places… okay maybe not all.  Hubby will probably make the trek to Bernie’s in Downtown LA.  But I’m happy with More Than Waffles in Encino.  Or Cookin’ with Lenny in Lake Manor.  I’ll be going somewhere with my girls Thursday night so I hope they are planning on eating well wherever we go. Korean BBQ, maybe?

I haven’t done much more than what I’ve already posted the last few days but I did get a little hand quilting done and a few more of those triangles are finished for step 1 of Celtic Solstice.  I’ll be back in front of my sewing machine on Sunday.  I hope to get Block 5 of Hampton Ridge done and started on Step 2 of Celtic Solstice.

I haven’t mentioned it recently but I am still working on our holiday newsletter.  In fact, it’s probably at the top of my WIP list as it has a deadline, which has gone and passed.  🙂  My internal deadline is always the week after Thanksgiving.  But – it doesn’t always happen.  However, I’m well along that I might be able to get it out next week.  The layout is done – actually I cheated and used the same template from 2011.  I don’t think it matters anyway.  I think everyone likes the pictures and the notes from the children and just want something to care about the layout.  The pictures have all been picked and placed.  All that is left is the writing, which I’ll be working on when I return.  The new soft deadline is to get this in the mail by next weekend. The hard deadline is before Christmas. 🙂

WIP Wednesday – 11/27/2013

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

It’s really early but the kids are out of school this week for the holiday. So we took advantage of it and got them to decorate the house for Christmas.  Thanksgiving is at another family’s house so we’re free and clear to start early.  But that means my sewing machine is tucked away and my sewing area has become Christmas Central.  I’m not sure where I’ll be sewing during this time but there is no way I’m not sewing for the next few weeks.  I just have to be okay with  a temporary, possibly cramped, space.  And as long as I have my sewing machine to keep me sane, I’m okay with that.  Just a brief update on what I’ve been (or not been) working on lately –

I haven’t been doing much lately and there is nothing new to add from retreat.  I’ve been working a lot lately and instead of quilting during breaks like I used to do, I’ve been playing Sudoku on the iPad.  🙁  Last night I did finish watching “Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine” with Ann Petersen and I was inspired to do the block by block method for Raining Cats and Dogs.  I need to check out the finishing instructions and see if that method will work but I think that will help me get that project quilted.

Thanks to the hubby, I’ve got all the ingredients for our part of the Thanksgiving Feast and I’ll be starting that tonight after work.  I’ve got half my Christmas shopping done – thanks to the internet and only a few more people left.  The Holiday Newsletter is not even close to getting done but all the pictures are picked and I’m making it real simple this year.  No one cares about lay out and stuff – all they want are the pictures of the kids.  And this year, that will have to be good enough for me too.

WIP Wednesday – 11/20/2013

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

I have nothing new to report from the weekend.  I just started working on block 2 of Raining Cats and Dogs and I haven’t moved that much further along since Monday.  I touched My Hand Quilt only once since then too.  Easy Street is out of the machine but I am not yet finished with it.  I do not think I’m going to get it done before 11/29.  Which is okay with me.  I still want to get it done by year end.  While I finished Block #2 (September) for Rainbow Garden, I haven’t prepped Block #1 (October) for the retreat on Friday.  I know it’s weird – Block #2 came before Block #1 but some times that’s what happens with BOMs.

At the retreat I plan on working on Missing Ivy.  I haven’t touched it the last few months and I’m hoping it will re-invigorate my quiltiness.

The end of the year is fast approaching.  Are you ready?  I’m not.  I really need to get my act together so I may have to meditate and just brainstorm everything I need to get done – and figure out which items I absolutely must do, which are to be delegated and which are to be taken off completely.

WIP Wednesday – 10/30/2013

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedGetting it done – one piece at a time…

I’ve been spending most of my time quilting the secret project and a bit of hand work.  I do not like switching from quilting to regular piecing because I’d have to switch out the feet and I’d rather just finish the quilting than going back and forth between quilting and piecing.  But the quilting is done now.  I’ll finish hand binding tomorrow and will get the label on it at some point. I’m sorry I can’t post pictures yet.

1. Raining Cats and Dogs – Block 6 – The house is done.  I’ve got the dog and the lamp left to do.  At the rate I’m going, this should be done in the next week or two and I’ll be able to start on the next block next month.  This is definitely going much faster than I thought since Block 6 wasn’t even on my list of things to get done this month.  When I started this BOM it took me 3 months to complete the first block.  So I’m happy to see how much I’ve improved over the last two years.  When I put all the blocks together it will be interesting to compare the first blocks I did with these last few and see visually my improvement.

2. my hand quilt – Working on quilting Border #3 – I finished quilting the first ring of the last border last night. I think I’ll be doing at least 2 more rings but I may turn that into 3.  We’ll see how it looks as I get further along.

3. Rainbow Garden – I’ve slowly been working on this BOM.  It was a really slow start.  I got my first block in September only to discover that I didn’t have the right thread.  I’d never worked with wool before so I had no idea what I was doing.  I didn’t even know what kind of thread I needed.  So I asked the shop doing the BOM to send me my thread and they sent it to me with my October block.  So right off the bat I was a month behind.  When I received the thread I enjoyed looking at it and the pieces of wool but I was afraid to cut into it.  Again, I had no idea what I was doing.  I went online and googled how to applique wool.  The method I found and I tried was the following:

  • Trace patterns (without a 1/4 inch seam allowance) onto freezer paper – I used a lightbox
  • cut around the patterns – not on the line but just to separate them from each other
  • Iron them onto the correct color of wool – I had to look at the picture and figure out which piece matched which fabric
  • cut the pattern and wool on the line to get the exact wool piece
  • place the pieces onto the background material – I matched the picture to figure out where things go where
  • use a lot of needles to pin it down

This BOM listed the order of the tread in the instructions they sent for the September packet.  I haven’t looked at the October packet so I do not know if this was just done for the first one or will be the case each time.  It helps that they list it in order.  At first I wasn’t sure what kind of stitch to use.  When I applique normally, I’m needle-turning for an invisible stitch.  That isn’t something I can do with wool.  One, because it’s to thick.  Second, because I didn’t cut a seam allowance.  Well – even if I did – it would still be too thick to needle-turn wool. 🙂  The instructions said to whipstitch.  I’ve always understood whipstitch to be the simplest stitch in stitching two fabrics together but I still thought that the stitch was practically invisible – at least I tried to make it so.  I whipstitch when I do my hexies.  But nobody taught me this and all my research has been online so it may not necessarily be correct.  I tried to applique the wool with the whipstitch being “invisible” but it didn’t come out so well so I made the stitch visible and I think it looks better.

This process has been a real enlightenment for me working with something new.  I’m almost done stitching it.  I’ve got the large leaves and the stem left to do and the last step is to embroider.  I’m not sure yet what that entails as the only embroidery I’ve done is the bit I have to do with Raining Cats and Dogs.  But while I’m stitching I realize that this is an art that doesn’t need to be precise and maybe that’s why there isn’t specific instructions on how to do it.  You pretty much have to look at it and do whatever looks right to you.  This is so different than appliqueing with cotton fabric which has to be very precise.  I have to consciously let go of wanting to be precise and just do what I think looks right.
