Stash Report – Week 34, 2014

Hampton Ridge Block 30 8/24/14

Hampton Ridge
Block 30
8/24/14

Another week gone by with nothing used and, thankfully, nothing added.  I did have a productive weekend though.  I was able to finish quilting the straight lines of Flowers and Baskets with my walking foot yesterday.  So this week I’ll be starting to quilt the blocks with the flowers and baskets.  I will also start playing with designs to go in the middle of the black squares between the flowers and baskets.  I want it to be big and flowy not small or even a middle sized motif.  The small quilting will make the quilt a little stiff and I do not want the quilt to be stiff.  I also will need the design to be easy for me to do as I’m still working on my FMQ skills.  That’s another thing I was able to do this weekend.  I practiced a bit on my feathers.  Whew!  It’s been 10 months since I’ve done that and I need the practice.  I first started doing the feathers at PIQF last year (2013) at a Sue Nichols class on machine quilting.  We used the Bernina 750 and I fell in love with the machine.  However, my current machine (Bernina 330) does everything I need it to – it sews a straight line and I can FMQ on it.  So the expense of the 750 just didn’t seem worth it.  While practicing I was able to compare my FMQ practice that I did then with the FMQ practice I did now – and recognize the quality of the stitch is so much better on the 750 than on my 330.  I’m not sure if it is my abilities but I have more experience now with FMQ than I did then and it was easier getting the stitch quality from the 750 than it was from the 330.  So – that’s what you pay for when you get a very expensive machine.  ;0 Since it is not something I choose to spend my extra money on right now – I’ll have to just keep practicing with the 330 and know that with time my FMQ skills will improve regardless of the machine.

The other items on my to do list this weekend was Hampton Ridge and Raining Cats and Dogs.  For Hampton Ridge, I really want to get caught up, but I’ve lost the motivation for this BOM.  I haven’t really learned anything new for awhile and I’m just putting pieces together, paying close attention to detail to obtain the points I desire, and I’m kind of bored. That’s really bad as I’m already 3 months behind and I do not want to be further behind.  The more behind I get the more my motivation goes away.  Each kit contains the making of 4 blocks and for Kit #8 I’ve only finished 1 of 4 blocks.  Granted I’ve got all the borders finished for the other 3 so if I push myself I could get the other 3 done but I’m not sure I want to.

For Raining Cats and Dogs – Block 7 – this is the last block.  I put together the backing last weekend and this weekend I wanted to get the image 1 (a dog) traced onto it for me to do over this next week.  I may do that first before I start working on Block 31 for Hampton Ridge since that will not take a long time.

To Do:

1 – determine which 2 blocks I’ll do the quilting on this week for Flowers and Baskets

2 – Raining Cats and Dogs – transfer the image of the dog on to the background

3 – Hampton Ridge – Block 31, 32, and 33.

The Weekend Line Up

I was able to get Moon Glow caught up last weekend so 2 of my 3 BOMs are caught up.  I’ve got 3 kits of Hampton Ridge in a pile for me to complete and that’s one of the top to do items for this weekend.  For some reason – I’m not feeling Hampton Ridge right now.  I have a feeling it’s because I’m so behind and unlike the other BOMs – 3 kits translates to 12 blocks.  Oh well, I’ve just got to put my big girl pants on and just start doing it.  Hopefully, I’ll start getting into it once I do.  That’s what happened with Moon Glow last week.  I didn’t have any intention to finish up Moon Glow so I hope that whatever bug got into me then will get me going on Hampton Ridge.

I have been keeping myself busy on other things.  I actually started quilting Flowers and Baskets.  I realized the other day that my finish quilt goal this year is 6.  I’ve already finished 4 so I only have 2 more to go.  While I’m doing well on my BOMs, none of them will be ready for quilting and finishing this year.  Which means, I have to take two of my finished tops and quilt them by the end of the year to meet my goal.  I have three quilts on my target list to finish for 2014.  Those are Raining Cats and Dogs, Missing Ivy, and Celtic Solstice.  All three of those are nowhere near ready to be quilted so I doubt that they will be done this year.  I originally wrote that list at the beginning of the year so I need 1 other quilt to finish.  I think that will be Month by Month.  That is my last quilt top waiting to be quilted.  So over the next couple of months I’ll be quilting Flowers and Baskets on my little Bernina.  Then once that is done, I’ll be quilting Month by Month.  And by the end of the year I will meet my 6 quilts for 2014 goal.  🙂

Quilting Flowers and Baskets

Quilting Flowers and Baskets

Right now I’m quilting the straight lines on Flowers and Baskets with a walking foot.  I’ll be done with that this weekend.  Then, I’ll be quilting inside the blocks of flowers and baskets.  That may take me a little while as it’s a mix of straight lines and FMQ.  But they’re going to be different on each block.  Then I’m going to work on FMQ on the empty blocks between the flowers and baskets.  I’m still not sure what to put there but they’ll be the same on each empty square.  And finally, I’ll quilt the borders.  Everything within the borders will be quilted with black Aurifil 50w.  The borders will be quilted with a purple Aurifil 50w.

Celtic Solstice - Step 4 4 Patches 100 assembled the rest waiting for me

Celtic Solstice – Step 4
4 Patches
300 assembled

I was also able to finish up Step 4 of Celtic Solstice.  I’ll check out what’s involved with Step 5 and put that on next week’s to do list. 🙂

So this weekend’s lineup is:

  1. finish straight line quilting Flowers and Baskets
  2. Practice FMQ
  3. Hampton Ridge
  4. get the next part of Block 7 for Raining Cats and Dogs set up for applique-ing.

Happy Quilting!

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 5 of Moon Glow!  I’m now caught up with the BOM and I’m so happy!  I know I’ll be getting the next kit for Hampton Ridge so it would have been nice if I’d worked on that kit.  But I didn’t have time to finish 4 blocks so I chose to do the one block left for Moon Glow.  I wasn’t expecting to get it done since there looked to be a lot of pieces to put together.  But it came together pretty easily.  You can’t tell in the picture but the middle is a little fluffy.  I’m hoping as I continue to do more foundation piecing, these will flatten out more.

Since I edited my post from the Sunday stash late with a picture of Block 2 of Raining Cats and Dogs, I’m reposting a picture of it here.

For BOM Away Monday, here is last month’s kit of Hampton Ridge.  Once I fell behind on this BOM it took awhile for me to get back into the hang of things.  I can’t believe two months have gone by since I last worked on it.  I got these 5 done this weekend and I’ve got this month’s kit waiting for me to do.  Maybe next weekend I’ll be able to retrieve all of the previous blocks to display on the design wall.

I’ve been out of town travelling for the last week but before I left I was able to finish all the blocks left for Hampton Ridge.  So now I’m all caught up!

I do all the borders (the half square triangles) for all of the blocks at one time.  This way I can concentrate on the center units one at a time.

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 11 of Hampton Ridge.  I’m debating between this and Block 9 for favorite block so far.  I am loving pinwheels right now and I’m thinking about doing a pinwheel quilt at some point in the distant future.  I squeezed this in last night before bed.  I wanted to get this one done this weekend but I doubt I’ll have time to do any more of these blocks during the next two weeks.  I’ve got about 5 blocks waiting for me to finish before the next kit arrives and I’m going to try really hard to get some of them done during the week.

Hampton Ridge BOM Block 10 Finished January 17, 2014

Hampton Ridge BOM
Block 10 Finished
January 17, 2014

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 10 of Hampton Ridge.  Not a favorite but it was easy to put together.  These blocks are getting easier and easier (of course, now that I’ve said the next one is going to be hard!)  I believe that I’m just getting better at understanding the instructions and my scant 1/4 inch is more accurate as I continue my quilting progress.  I’ve never before the last 7 months quilted as regularly as I am now and my accuracy and understanding is approving greatly.  I love it! I have two more blocks to go before I’m done for this month and I know I’m not going to get to it.  I’m travelling next week and I’m not back until Sunday evening.  Then I’ve got to pick up my machine (which should be ready by then) and then it’s February.  Life is going to get even busier these next few weeks.  My mom is having a small party on February 1 and then the girl has cheer competition the next two weekends.  The weekend after that finds me and the hubby in Vegas celebrating his birthday.  So I’m going to have to quilt during the week and around these life events.  🙂  I hope I don’t far too far behind my BOMs.

Moon Glow BOM Block 2 Finished January 18, 2014

Moon Glow BOM
Block 2 Finished
January 18, 2014

I’m really happy that Block 2 of Moon Glow was much better than Block 1.  I paid close attention to the instructions.  The square in the middle was appliqued on and I know it isn’t straight or anything but I like it this way.  I was watching Carol Doak’s Mastering Foundation Paper Piecing on Craftsy to help me as I foundation pieced the star together and it helped a lot!  I’m now caught up with the Moon Glow BOM!

The other BOMs are: Tell it to the stars – which I’m caught up with!  A Rainbow Garden – I’m three months behind on this one.  I’m working on Block 3 but this is primarily hand work.  I’ll be taking this with me as I travel around so I’m hoping I get a lot done before the next kit comes in February. And finally Lucky Stars!  I’m letting the 2013 BOM go and I may get back to it when my current BOMs finish off.  But I couldn’t help but get into the 2014 BOM when Elizabeth rolled out her special for this year.  I think it was $10 for the year?  I can’t remember but I got it last November or December.  I’m not yet late but with my upcoming schedule I do not know if I’ll be able to get this caught up before the end of February.  In the meantime, I still need to pick out fabric anyway. 🙂

For Design Wall Monday, it was getting full with all the BOMs on there so I removed everything and kept only Hampton Ridge up.

Stash Report – Week 3, 2014

I’ve been plugging along this week working on a bit of everything.  But nothing to add to the used list.  A bit of work on Raining Cats and Dogs, and Rainbow Garden.  Hampton Ridge Block 10 and most of Moon Glow block 2.  I’m hoping to get that done sometime this morning.

I am taking my sewing machine in to the shop.  It’s been acting a little funny – the thread has been snapping a lot lately and I’m not sure why.  It could be nothing but I’d rather be safe than sorry.  I’ve cleaned it to the best of my ability but I guess it needs someone to go in to all those tiny places I can’t reach.  This is a perfect time to take it in as I’ll be travelling this week for work and will not be at home to use it anyway.  Great news for my hand projects.  🙂

Hampton Ridge BOM
Block 9 Finished
January 11, 2014

For BOM Away Monday, here is Block 9 of Hampton Ridge.  I absolutely love this block.  It is now my favorite block in this BOM so far.  I may at some point make a quilt filled with this block.

I am slowly feeling much better.  Being sick really put me out of things for a bit.  I did get through the worst part fairly quickly but I’ve been out of sorts for a few weeks at least.  Not to mention, I’m still working a lot more than normal.  But I got back into the quilting groove this weekend.  It actually started Thursday when I spent the evening hand applique-ing Raining Cats and Dogs.  Then on Friday, I snipped all the ends of the Chevrons for Celtic Solstice while watching the girl at open gym practicing her tumbling skills.  When I got home I got most of Block 9 for Hampton Ridge finished and finished it off Saturday morning.  Then I spent the rest of the day doing the first clue for Tell It To The Stars.  I probably could have done it much faster but I kept stopping to take step by step pictures.  I think they turned out pretty well.

Sunday, I finally finished the 244 Chevrons for Step 2 of Celtic Solstice.  I also finished Step 3 with 61 pinwheels and 244 HST.

With step 2 finally done and step 3 done as well I’m ready to finish the 4 patches that was step 4.  Those should be done fairly quick this coming weekend and I can get going on step 5.  I haven’t even started that step so I have no idea if that will be fast or something like step 2.  I really want to get this top done this month and it really depends on how quickly step 5 and step 6 come together.  I’ll keep you posted with how things go!

Happy quilting everyone!

Stash Report – Week 2, 2014

Being in the black was short-lived!  I ended up deciding to play with Judy’s year-long mystery quilt – Tell It To The Stars and purchased the fabric provided by Vicki Welsh.  So I’ve got 14 big whopping yards to add! But it is for a project and I’m happy to say that I finished the first clue yesterday.  I’ll post about it with pictures in a bit but I wanted to get my stash report posted first thing this morning.  I did get a lot of work done on some of my BOMs – here’s a sneak peek…

I’m not really happy with the first block for Moon Glow.  I got confused with the instructions and messed up big time.  I’ve got a huge poof in the middle of this star and I’m not sure what I’m going to do about – keep it as a reminder of lessons learned or if I want to purchase the fabric and do it over again.
