WIP Wednesday – 4/6/2016

Happy Wednesday!

Now that Scrapitude is done I should be working on Moon Glow.  But I’m not.  Instead, I’ve been doing a bit more on the million pieces for Celtic Solstice.

The current state of my sewing table.

I’ve just been piecing bits at a time.  So I’m only getting bits done at a time and it feels like it is taking longer.  I’ll keep at this until the weekend.  Then I’ll clean up the table and take out Raining Cats and Dogs to put border #2 on.

All I had time to do last night was to trim Scrapitude.  I needed to bring it to my mini group meeting so trimmed, it’s passable.  Now all I need to do is to go through my stash and find a good binding to go with it.  That will need to be done this weekend since that will involve pulling out my fabric bins and no one’s got time for that!

Until that happens, I’ll be working on getting the 3 other sides of border #1 attached to Raining Cats and Dogs!

Happy Wednesday!

I pulled out Celtic Solstice to work on this week a bit at a time as I found it.  I need to make a bunch of Block A’s.  Here are 24 blocks finished and I need more.

Happy Wednesday!

I’m so excited because I’m almost done with Hampton Ridge!  After all the ripping, I was able to get all 4 borders pieced.

Happy Wednesday!

I’m still working on Tell It To The Stars.  I won’t bore you with another picture of the same thing.  Just know that I’ve got 2 sides completely bound.  I’m about halfway through the 3rd side.  With me at QuiltCon this week, I doubt I will get this finished before the next Sunday Stash Report.

I am happy to report that I did get into the Wool Applique class that I was waitlisted for at QuiltCon.  I got most of my supplies together.  The only thing I need to get is wool.  I’ve never bought wool separately (outside of a kit) before so I am planning on getting some at QuiltCon specifically for this class.

The other major thing I’ve been working on is Hampton Ridge. Border #3 is now on!

Now I’m working on Border #4.  There are a gajillion HSTs on Border #4.  It’s funny how one step in this process can be broken down into multiple steps.  In this case, we’re using the Star Singles paper thingies (cuz I don’t know what they’re called).  First I had to cut all the fabric, then I sewed on the lines.

Then I trimmed….

The next step is to cut, cut, and cut!  There’s a lot of cutting there.  Once all those things are cut, I have to remove the paper and press towards the dark of the HST. My goal for this week is to get all the cutting done.

Sorry for an old picture.  I’ll try to get a better pic over the weekend.  I’ve been working exclusively on Tell It To The Stars.  The borders are all quilted.  I did it with my Bernina and Aurifil 50w #2326 which is a tan color.  I used the same thread on the top and the bobbin and I basically FMQ’d it.  I made it a simple meander which I felt worked really well on the border.

I took Bailey off the frame and brought him to be serviced.  I took him to a shop I’d never been to before but is down the street from my office and on my way home.  The lady proprietor was very nice and gave me a lot of info on upcoming events.  I did have better luck with Bailey once I started using the bottom line thread in the bobbin so I’m hoping that with the service he’ll be up to snuff for the next 2 quilts ready to be quilted.  I’m still looking into whether it might be the frame so this weekend I’ll be cleaning it real good and putting a level on it to see if it’s simply uneven.  Hopefully that will fix it right up.

I also got the binding half on.  The only thing left to do is pull the binding to the back and hand stitch it.  I’m really excited to get this done.  I was finishing up the borders when I realized that I couldn’t remember what I had done with the binding.  I purchased the fabric as a kit and the instructions said to pull out one of them and save it for the binding. While I was putting the top together the binding fabric was with everything else.  I realized that I included the binding fabric in the backing and no longer had the binding to use. :0  I ended up going through my stash to find something.  I feel what I picked works and I love that I didn’t buy fabric (as I was initially inclined to do.)

And that’s it, I’m hoping to get this done this week so I can report the finish on the sunday stash report.  And for once be in the black.  I haven’t done much knitting this week.  I haven’t done much cross stitching.  We had friends over for the Super Bowl and that took over the weekend.  We always enjoy having our friends over and reconnecting with everyone so I’m not complaining.  I just didn’t get as much done as I usually do. 🙂 Most of my crafting happens on the weekends and the weekdays I use the time to go to yoga.  Since I didn’t spend as much time as I usually do I’m a bit out of sorts and so my yoga has gotten pushed aside so I can get my quilt therapy in.

Happy Wednesday!

I’m back from Road at the same ol’ same ol’… work, home, craft, work…

I got a little more quilting done on Tell It To The Stars, another round knitted on my Rosie Hat and I practiced a bit on my hand quilting.  I think my regular hand quilting is fine.  I could be better but I really want to learn how to use the Aunt Becky tool.  I just can’t get it right.  At the hand quilting class I took at Road last week, the instructor said I’ve got the foundations right I just need practice.  It sure doesn’t feel right but I guess I’ll keep at it until it clicks.  I’m seriously contemplating hand quilting Raining Cats and Dogs so I’m practicing now for when that is done.  I’ve got to piece the blocks together, piece the borders on before the top will be done, then the back, then baste — so, I’ve got plenty of time to practice before I get to that point.

For now, I’m loving my new thimble.  It sure is wonderful to hand quilt with it.  The needle doesn’t slip off the thimble.  It slips off in other ways but I sure can’t blame the thimble when it does. 🙂

WIP Wednesday – 1/20/2016

Happy Wednesday!

Greetings from Road2CA!  Yesterday I took Carrie Fondi’s hand applique class.  We learned how to use the glue stick method, the traditional freezer paper method, and back basting method.  The class description says that it is open to beginning appliquers to advanced, but I think it should really be for beginning appliquers unless an advanced appliquer wants to learn one of the particular methods taught.  I enjoyed Carrie and the classmates.  I enjoyed the pattern but I didn’t really learn anything new and I’m surprised to say that I’m no longer a beginner.  I guess it’s about time, I’ve only been applique-ing since I started quilting 10 years ago.  I took the class because I want to applique better.  I still find it hard to do V’s, sharp points, and internal curves.  I guess I just need to keep practicing or go to my LQS to ask one of the expert ladies there to do a one on one class with me.  The methods that we used in the class are fine but I generally don’t want to work that hard in preparing my project.  While working on Raining Cats and Dogs, I found it easiest to draw the pattern on the fabrics and just needleturn it.  I tried using starch and other methods but it would just take too long for me.  And it never gave me the smoothness that I got when I just drew it.  To each their own.  I did get a smooth curve using all the methods that we did in class so that was great.  I can see how different methods can work in different scenarios.  I didn’t really learn anything new but I would still take classes like these just to check out if there is anything new out there.  We got to hear and see different products that different people liked and use so that’s always a benefit.  I’m not sure I would do an all day thing like I did today.  Also, I know I’m not going to finish this project but here’s a far as I got.

img_9292

Here’s the glue stick method with the wash away fusible piece on the back.  I just placed it onto the background fabric for placing and picture purposes.

img_9296

There’s a missing stem that if I finished this piece would cover the the frayed parts of the leaves on the left.  As you can see, pretty smooth curves.

img_9295

The leaves on the right were the freezer paper method and I didn’t like that method at all.  The freezer paper was on top of the fabric so I couldn’t really see what I was doing and the freezer paper kept moving around.  This was the most similar to me just drawing the pattern on the fabric.  The difference is the freezer paper and if it would just keep still, I think it would be fine.  Carrie did say that this method helps if you are using fabric that you can’t mark up well so I can see how it would help.

Today, I’m taking a break from classes and will do some work.  Tomorrow I’m back at classes and I’ll actually be staying in Ontario so I will not need to drive back and forth! 🙂  I’m taking an evening class that will end at 10 and then the following morning an early 8am class.  This was a last minute decision but a good one I think. 🙂  I don’ know if I’ll be able to post anything the next few days from Road but I’ve got some things scheduled for you to check on. 🙂

Happy Wednesday!

My sewing area is still surrounded by scrapbooking bags but I managed to find a space (my lap) to pin pieces of my Celtic Solstice.  I woke up way too early this morning so I took the opportunity to trim and pin.  Didn’t get a chance to sew them together but they can wait patiently until I get a chance.
