Happy Wednesday!

IMG_8246

Very little has been done on all fronts.  I’ve been out hanging with the family and when I’m not off with them, I’ve been working hard.

I have some more blue triangles cut for Celtic Solstice some left sides pieced.  I’ve got a ton to press but the ironing board is missing (Hubby took it) and I haven’t been inspired to steal it back.

On a side note – I registered for QuiltCon 2016 in Pasadena.  But since I registered late, I’m waitlisted for the Special Exhibits Tour before the show begins in the morning as well as the Modern Wool Applique class.  I was able to enroll in the following lectures:

  • Color Theory for Modern Quilters
  • Great American Quilt Revival
  • How Do I Quilt It

I’m excited and cannot wait for February to come along.

I was also looking at Road2CA and I’ve got a list of potential classes to take.  This one takes more time because there are a lot more options and it’s a week long event.  I have to figure out which classes I want to take that are available and then go through and see if any conflict. Then decide between conflicting options and tally up all the costs, etc.  I’ll post the final selections when I make them.

I was also thinking of going to PIQF but I wouldn’t be taking any classes because it’s this coming month (October) and I don’t feel like trekking all the way up to Santa Clara.  There’s always next year.

Happy Wednesday!

All the triangles on the right sides have been pieced.

I still have to press some of them.  Next step is to piece the left sides.  I’ll be working on those a little at a time this week.  I hope to get some cutting done too because once those left sides are done I’ve got a blue triangle to piece to the unit.  I still need to cut those blue triangles.  :0

Cheers to progress – what little there may be!  One foot forward is till one foot forward!

Quiltville

I’m working on Celtic Solstice and I had a hard time trying to figure out where I was.  I had all the fabric and pieces in two bins but no clear direction as to where I finished and what my next step was.  I went to my project page for Celtic Solstice and the last thing was a picture of 100 4-patches from step 4.  I couldn’t even remember if I was doing the small version or the large version.  Knowing me it was the large version.  So I needed needed more 4-patches in order to complete Step 4.  But when I pulled out all the 4-patches it sure looked to be more than 100 4-patches.  I counted them and had the amount I needed for step 4.  So Step 4 was done and I’m on Step 5.

Then I went to look for all my neutrals in my two bins but I didn’t have any.  What happened to them all?  I did have a bunch of triangles and I knew I messed up in the first step by cutting way to much of something.  I figured I cut way too much of the neutrals so I cut them up to use in Step 5.  Hopefully I was right and I don’t need to cut more triangles later down the line.

So I’ve spent the last two days cutting and that’s not my favorite part of the process.  I’m trying to do a little bit at a time because if I try to do too much at once I am less accurate.  And I’ve found that accuracy in cutting is one key component in getting everything to line up right!

Here’s my cutting station…. kind of cleaned up for the moment.  Ready for me to start cutting again when I get back to it…

And here are Scrap Bins #1 and #2… It’s handy to have next to the cutting table.  That way I can get them into the proper bin as soon as I cut them.  Saves me from having to do it later.  And it keeps the cutting table clear of stuff I don’t need.  Since I’m using it with my office desk I need that to be clean so I can work properly when I’m at home. As you can see bin #2 is getting up there and DD and I will have to buckle down one of these nights and whip some scrap blocks out to bring that bin to a better size.

Soaking my feet

After a day of on and off icing, I dipped my feet in the pool.  It’s nice to have a pool to dip into.  I’m very grateful.

But here’s where I am on Moon Glow.  The borders are done and all I have to do next is attach them to the top.  Then I have miter the corners.  Not sure if I’ll be able to get to it anytime soon.  I’m gingerly walking around and I’m not in the mood to do so in the sewing room.  Well, I’m working from home as I recuperate and when I’m done working – I have to leave this room.  My sewing room doubles as an office. A few days off will not hurt in the overall scheme of things.

Hey – something cool happened.  The girl asked for her sewing machine so she can randomly sew when she gets the urge.  I was thrilled.  She isn’t interested in actually doing anything – she really doesn’t have time.  She just wants to sew pieces of fabric together whenever she feels the need to relax. I wonder where she gets that from?  I have my bin of scraps (really small scraps) and I’ve given her free reign to piece them together.  I have been known to do the same when I’m bored with current projects and I don’t want to start anything new.  Anyway, now I just need to get the hubby to put one of the furniture pieces that was relegated to the garage because we weren’t sure where to put it and move it into the girl’s room.  Then I can take her little Bernette out for her to play with at her leisure.  She learned how to make pillowcases over the summer.  Maybe we can re-visit how to do it and maybe she’ll want to make more.  Maybe she’ll want to make some for Christmas gifts…. 🙂

Moon Glow Strips 9/1/2015

Moon Glow Strips
9/1/2015

I’m working on the borders for Moon Glow.  I’ve spent the last few days measuring and cutting strips and strips.  And since I’m a nerd I created a project plan to help keep me organized over the next few steps:

  1. Piece the strips (of the same fabric) together
  2. Cut each strip into 4 equal strips
  3. Piece fabric #1 with fabric #2 to create piece A
    • repeat for fabric #3 and fabric #4 to create piece B
    • repeat for fabric #5 and fabric #6 to create piece C
  4. Piece A +B to create piece D
    • repeat for C and fabric #7 for piece E
  5. Piece D+E for 4 sets of borders
  6. Then connect top and bottom
  7. connect right and left
  8. finally, miter the corners

That’s my project plan over the next few days.  The tables are a bit of a mess with all the pieces strewn about although nicely labeled so I don’t drive myself crazy.  But that means that I can’t take out Raining Cats and Dogs until this project is done.  I’m kind of sad about that since I’ve been making a lot of headway on that project the past couple of weeks.

Tell It To The Stars!
back
6/3/2015

I’m still working on the back for Tell It To The Stars!  I haven’t done much from over the weekend because, well – life!  But imagine one of those sides pieced with 10″ of gray fabric.

I’ve got a night out tonight with a friend and a night out on Friday so very limited quilty time this week.  But I love having those nights out with friends and catching up with each other.

Scrapitude back 6/3/2015

Tell It To The Stars!
back
6/3/2015

I haven’t made it yet to my LQS to get border fabric for Scrapitude so I’ve been piecing the back together for Tell It To The Stars.  I’ve found when I feel lost or at a standstill simply tackling the first doable item on my list helps get me going.  It’s almost done.  I actually like it.  I’ve even piece the label on it.  I made the mistake of putting May 2015 as the finish date but I’m not going back in to change that.  I’ll just get this done as soon as possible. 🙂  The back is not yet big enough so I’m debating if I should continue to piece the remaining hand dyed fabric that came with the kit or if I should add to the back with the extra gray fabric that I bought for this project.  If I piece the hand dyed fabric together – it will take a lot more time than using the gray fabric.  And I don’t really think it will be worth it.  Most of it will be cut off once I trim it after it’s been quilted.  I’m leaning towards using the gray.  What do you guys think?

Scrapitude 5/27/2015

Scrapitude
5/27/2015

I’m working on finishing the top for Scrapitude.  I’ve got all the blocks pieced in rows and I’m in the middle of putting together the rows of sashing.  I’ve got 3 more of those rows to finish up and then I can piece the row of blocks with the row of sashes.  Once that is done I’ll work on getting the borders together.  I like how the quilt looks.  This started out as a mystery so you just never know with mysteries whether you’ll like how it will turn out and I’m happy that I like this one.  I wasn’t very organized when I put the blocks together.  I originally paid close attention in the block layouts and not place matching fabrics together.  However I didn’t label anything and my blocks got mixed up.  As you can see I ended up sewing matching fabrics together.  I’m not pleased about that but that’s what I get when I just want to piece things together and not take the time to label and organize everything.

Hampton Ridge 5/20/2015

Hampton Ridge
5/20/2015

I’m off on my business trip and I’m probably sitting cold in a conference room in Vegas while you read this.  Before I left, I went back to Hampton Ridge and discovered that the sashing and corner stones were cut previously.  So I’ve been working on piecing everything together.  I did get all the rows of sashing done and now I’m working on putting the sashes with the blocks.  I organized myself by putting all the blocks in the order along with pink post its to tell me which row it is in.  I finished the first two rows and I’ve got the third row waiting for me when I get back from Vegas.

Scrapitude 2015 Clue #4 5/7/2015

Scrapitude 2015
Clue #4
5/7/2015

The final clue has not yet been released for Scrapitude but Charlotte has a good excuse.  So in the meantime, I will work on the backing for Tell It To The Stars.  With the whirlwind of activities over the last weekend, I wasn’t able to get anything done for it.  I still have to lay out my pieces on the floor and figure out what I’m going to do.
