Stash Report – Week 24, 2015

I was able to make it to my LQS yesterday and buy 2 more yards of the darker gray for the last 2 sides of the back for Tell It To The Stars.  I know 2 yards is a lot and I probably could get away with 1.5 yards but I just wanted to play it safe.  I’ve got the fabric in the wash and hopefully I’ll have time to get it dry and pressed and cut and pieced onto the back today.  It sounds like a lot when I list each step out like this but really it doesn’t take too much time.  It’s just that while waiting for the wash or the dryer to be finished – I have a tendency of getting involved in something else (work, another project, an errand) and then poof!  All those simple steps will get pushed to tomorrow or sometime next week.

I wasn’t able to go through the stash yesterday to pick fabric for the backing of Scrapitude.  And while I was at my LQS I almost forgot my plan to pull from my stash.  I had brought the top to the shop to show and was heading over to the sale section when I remembered.  Thank goodness I remembered – I’m really hoping to use up some stash with this one.   I’ll be picking backing today.

So I only have 2 yards to add to today’s stash.  If I have time (and energy), I will work on putting the sashes and rows for Hampton Ridge.

Back – so far

It seems like Tell It To The Stars is never done… I fixed the error I made on Gray border #1 and started on Gray border #2.  I am loving the gray combination and I’m glad I made the choice to go with gray.  I am also glad I went with the lighter gray first as it make a good gradated change to the darker gray.  I will have to run to my LQS later because I ran out of the darker gray.  I have a bit left but not enough to get the darker gray on the two remaining sides.  I would have thought 4 yards of the grays would have been enough but apparently not. 🙂

Happy Quilting friends!

So I made that ^^^ mistake!!!!
I pieced together the third side the wrong way on the back for Tell It To The Stars!  Time to put it down and fix it later.  I’ll be best friends with my seam ripper later and then hopefully I can get the gray border #1 done on the back.  I want to get gray border #2 finished this weekend and then I can get this on the frame for quilting.
Or… I can get the back for scrapitude and get that on the frame.  I will be going through my stash and I hope I can find yardage for the back.  I know I will not find any one piece of fabric for the entire thing but I hope I can find enough to piece together for the back of this.  It will be a scrappy back too. 🙂

I still haven’t gone to visit the sewing machine shop to ask some questions with the labels I made now a couple of weeks ago with my embroidery machine.  I have 1 more label to make for Month by Month so I want to finish that this weekend also.

It feels slow going.  They’re only backs and borders which I feel shouldn’t take too long but they are.  With the borders for Scrapitude I did take my time because I wanted it to come out right.  With Tell It To the Stars… well, I think life is overtaking my quilty time and I am just doing what I can when I’ve got time.  Once I get through these I can jump onto hampton ridge and get the sashes on. 🙂

I’m still working on the back for Tell It To The Stars!  I haven’t done much from over the weekend because, well – life!  But imagine one of those sides pieced with 10″ of gray fabric.

I’ve got a night out tonight with a friend and a night out on Friday so very limited quilty time this week.  But I love having those nights out with friends and catching up with each other.

Scrapitude – Finished top!  I got the borders on Saturday and now I’ve got to figure out what to do on the backing. But first… Tell It To The Stars… I wasn’t able to get the back finished because I need a ton more gray fabric than I thought.  I got 2 yards and apparently I’m going to need 4 or something.  Luckily I have a darker gray fabric that I purchased originally and it was too dark so I bought a lighter gray.  I plan to piece the lighter gray all around and then piece the darker gray around that.  I’ll have to check and make sure reality matches the picture in my head but I think that’s a great way to use fabric… rather than buying more of the lighter gray.  I was only able to cut the lighter gray, pressed and got one side pieced.  I’ll be working on the rest over the course of this week.

Stash Report – Week 23, 2015

The top is done for Scrapitude!  I made it to my LQS on Friday and picked out the fabric for the borders.  Worked on it all day yesterday.  It took forever since I was alternating between work stuff, eating, and socializing with the family. ;0    But it is done.  Next step for scrapitude is getting the backing together.  I was supposed to get the backing when I went to the shop but I forgot.  I got 3 yards for the borders.  I know that’s a lot and I have a lot extra but here’s what I did…

Scrapitude 2015 Mitered border 6/7/2015

Scrapitude 2015
Mitered border
6/7/2015

I mitered the borders.  I think it looks wonderful.  Of course when you look carefully not all four corners connect properly but I think they’re small enough to quilt out.   I’ve only mitered once or twice before so I like how it turned out.  In addition, I didn’t cut the border strips from selvage to selvage (which would have saved on the amount of yardage I added this week).  Instead I cut parallel to the selvage edge.  It saved me on piecing time.  I bought yards of the fabrics so that way I don’t have to piece a bunch of little strips.  I bought 2 yards of the darker blue and 1 yard of the cream inner border.  So for the darker blue batik I didn’t even have to piece anything.  I just cut 4 strips for the inner border and 4 strips for the outer border.  For the cream border I only pieced 2 strips together for each of the four sides.  By doing it this way, the borders are not as stretchy as it is when I use strips from selvage to selvage.  This is the first time I’ve done it this way and so far, I like how the top feels.  The borders feel more secure and fixed and I hope when I quilt it, they don’t stretch as much and not cut away from the border when I trim after I quilt. We’ll see how it turns out.  🙂

I can’t show a picture of the full thing yet because the top no longer fits on my design wall and the children are still sleeping!  I can’t ask/trick/ bribe them into holding it up for a picture but I plan to do it later today so I can post a picture then.

Today’s plan is to work on the backing for Tell It To The Stars.

Here’s the back to remind you what it looks like.  Thank you to everyone who commented.  I really like how it is turning out.  I have decided to go with the gray and today’s agenda is to measure, cut and sew them on.  If I have time (and energy), I will work on putting the sashes and rows for Hampton Ridge.

TGIF, 6/5/2015

Whooo!  What a busy week.  With the girl culminating and the boy’s baseball schedule we’ve been booked every night this week.  I’m so excited to spend a weekend with my sewing machine and no other obligations.

Scrapitude – I plan to go to my LQS this afternoon to get borders.  I plan to tackle this step this week.  I may also get backing fabric since I’m there and will save me a trip.

Tell It To The Stars – I agree with everyone’s response – The gray is the best option for completing this back.  I plan to finish the backing this weekend.

I also want to visit the sewing machine shop as I had some questions with the labels I made last week with my embroidery machine.  I have 1 more label to make for Month by Month so I want to finish that this weekend also.

The Midnight Mystery QAL ‘s fabric selection post was released yesterday and I’m hesitating on whether I want to be involved with this.  I think I’ll pass for right now.  I have some projects I want to get to and if I add this to my list, I won’t get to the projects I want to get to.  I have the instructions emailed to me each month so if I decide to play along later, I can always jump in.  For now, the final item on my list of things to work on this weekend is putting the sashing and blocks together for Hampton Ridge.

Scrapitude back 6/3/2015

Tell It To The Stars!
back
6/3/2015

I haven’t made it yet to my LQS to get border fabric for Scrapitude so I’ve been piecing the back together for Tell It To The Stars.  I’ve found when I feel lost or at a standstill simply tackling the first doable item on my list helps get me going.  It’s almost done.  I actually like it.  I’ve even piece the label on it.  I made the mistake of putting May 2015 as the finish date but I’m not going back in to change that.  I’ll just get this done as soon as possible. 🙂  The back is not yet big enough so I’m debating if I should continue to piece the remaining hand dyed fabric that came with the kit or if I should add to the back with the extra gray fabric that I bought for this project.  If I piece the hand dyed fabric together – it will take a lot more time than using the gray fabric.  And I don’t really think it will be worth it.  Most of it will be cut off once I trim it after it’s been quilted.  I’m leaning towards using the gray.  What do you guys think?

Stash Report – Week 19, 2015

happy-mothers-day

Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there!

Just a quick note before I head out to my Machine Applique workshop with Annie Smith for my guild.

I bought additional fabric for the backing for Tell It To The Stars.  That’s 2 yards.  Nothing finished.  I did get Clue #4 finished for Scrapitude but it’s not finished to be counted. 🙂 So I’ve got a couple of yards to add.  Also, I’ve been posting my quilty $$ for a couple of weeks and I’m going to stop doing that.  I’ll track it for myself but apparently I’m uncomfortable sharing that info with the world… who knew?!?

Used this week: 0 yards

Used year to Date: -28.75 yards
Added this week: 2 yards
Added Year to Date: 40.75 yards
Net Added for 2015: 12 yards

What I want to concentrate on next week:

Finish the backing for Tell It To The Stars.

Saturday Musings

Clippers Fan

I don’t ever go into this here on this blog but I’m a Clipper fan and we’re deep into Playoff Season.  Last night the family and I went to game 3 at Staples Center and wow! was it loud.  I’ve never been to a game with the kind of excitement and adrenaline as there is during a playoff game.  Here’s to a great series and hopefully a Clipper win!

Today my goal is to get the backing done for Tell It To The Stars.  Last I posted, here’s what it looked like:

Tell It To The Stars Designing the back 3/5/15

Tell It To The Stars
Designing the back
3/5/15

Well, I’m not enthused with it.  Some parts I like but I don’t feel like piecing all those little pieces for the back just to use it up.  I do want to use some of it.  So I got some gray fabric from my LQS and I plan to use the new fabric to accent the original fabric.  I plan to use my design floor to finish up designing it.  The quilt is bigger than my design wall so the floor will have to suffice.

I also have to prep for my class with Annie Smith tomorrow.  🙂

Have a great quilty weekend everyone… It’s Mother’s Day weekend so I hope you are spending as much time in your sewing room as you want to!
