Monday Madness – 2/1/2016

Happy Monday!

As with every Monday, I’m still working on quilting Tell It To The Stars!  But, the quilt is off the frame!  So I get to show a new picture of the quilt!  yeah!!

Tell It To The Stars mostly Quilted .. still need to quilt the borders... 1/31/2016

Tell It To The Stars

.. still need to quilt the borders…

It’s not entirely quilted.  I still have the borders to do and I’ve decided to finish those off on my domestic while I take the mid arm to get serviced.  I have to say that I switched the bobbin thread to Superior’s bottom line and it is running much better.  So I think with the service I should be in top shape for the rest of the year.  I think the next thing I need to consider is my frame and whether it is good enough.  I feel a pull on the machine which prevents me from making smooth curves and circles and I think it is because the frame is warped in certain areas and the wheels are not getting good traction.  I don’t know if this is really true but its a good possibility.  The frame is an older wooden Grace frame and before I bought it, it was in the previous owner’s garage.  When I bought it, it sat in my garage which was where I quilted before we moved into this current house and now it is in my living room.  I think being in the garage may have affected the wooden frame.  Not enough to notice but enough for the wheels not to run smoothly.  I’ll be doing some extensive cleaning of the frame before I put my next quilt on and I’ll be checking out different frames this year.  I don’t think I’ll have the mula to upgrade my machine at next year’s Road but I may be able to get myself a new frame.

My guild is having a mini group meeting tonight so I’ll be lugging this quilt along to share.  The meeting is an intro meeting for anyone interested in joining a mini group.  A lot of the mini groups in this guild have been together for YEARS and the only way to join an existing one is to be asked by someone.  For new members like myself, it’s hard to get into an existing mini group.  So, they are getting everyone who is interested in joining together so that we can potentially create a mini group or two of those interested in being part of one.  I hope there are enough people who are interested in an evening group.  I work so I can’t do day time meetings like a lot of the ladies do.

And… I was able to get Border #2 of Hampton Ridge mitered up nicely!  I know this has been waiting for awhile and now that the room is clean and organized, I felt up to tackling that task.

As I expected I didn’t get much done over the last week.  🙁

I haven’t mitered border #2 of Hampton Ridge yet.  But I did get the Star single sheets from the quilt shop! I think I’ll try to do a little each week rather than pull it out a month from now.  That way when Hampton Ridge comes back up in my project rotation I’ll have a bit done and maybe even get started on border #4.

WIP Wednesday – 12/2/2015

Happy Wednesday!

Not much has been done since break.  I got a bit of knitting done and a bit of cross stitch done during the basketball game Monday night.  Last night, I was able to get the final side of border #2 on Hampton Ridge.  First I fussy cut the final side.  I made sure to read the measurements again.  I didn’t want to make any mistakes.

The next step is to miter those corners, then I can get Border #3 on.  I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get to this until Sunday.  I’ve got a bunch of evening activities these next few nights and I will need to have my full attention when I go in to actually miter.  I will try to get those strips to line up properly but we’ll see how it goes.

Stash Report – Week 46, 2015

First, the stash report!  Went to my LQS this past week and got yardage for that final side of border #2 of Hampton Ridge.  I know I got way too much at +4 yards.  But I didn’t want to cut and piece the border.  Even with that info, I’m sure 4 yards is way too much but I needed at least 3 yards.  So I played it safe.  Not a big deal.  Now I’ll have plenty of dark fabric to add to my  stash!

Used this week: 0 yards

Used year to Date: -47.5 yards
Added this week: 4 yards
Added Year to Date: 98.08 yards
Net Added for 2015: 50.58 yards

Here’s what I got done from yesterday’s laundry list!

On Raining Cats and Dogs.

I know, the lighting is horrible but by the time I got around to taking a picture, the lighting outside wasn’t much better.  Anyway, if you can see the needle to right of the arrow, the remaining part to applique down is from that needle to the end of the stem towards the left. The plan is to get to that today so that next weekend I can move on to the next bit.

For Celtic Solstice, I was able to get the three rows of Block A put together.  Now I get to pack it up and set it aside for next month.  I realized while I was working on these that it took forever because I was trimming dog ears and then piecing.  For that middle row, I was also pinning to try and get those points to match up with the middle of those 4 patches.

And I was able to get Tell It To The Stars onto the frame.

Yesterday was very productive in my house.

Today, I’ve got a lot more running around.  The girl is cheering at her school’s open house so I’ve got to wake her up soon to get ready and go.  The boy’s harvest festival is today too.  But he is not interested in going and we heard that it is supposed to rain today.  If that’s the case, he will definitely not want to go out.  I’ve got yoga shortly and more studying.  I also still want to go to that store where I’ve got a coupon at (it expires today!).

Here’s my quilty plan of action:

  • Continue to work a bit on Raining Cats and Dogs.
  • Start the quilting on Tell It To The Stars on it.
  • Cut for Scrapitude 2016.
  • Pull Razzle out and get going on that project for this week.

I’m still uncertain about joining Bonnie Hunter’s mystery.  I know last week I said I was going to and now this week I’m not sure again.  I started pulling fabrics from my stash and I’m not sure I’ve got enough of the colors she chose.  I’m waffling, I know, but I love the community around the mysteries each year.  That’s the best part.  I just don’t think I’ve got the time. Well, we’ll see how I feel  on Black Friday.

Stash Report – Week 45, 2015

First, the stash report!  Nothing In and Nothing Out

Used this week: 0 yards

Used year to Date: -47 yards
Added this week: 0 yards
Added Year to Date: 94.08 yards
Net Added for 2015: 46.58 yards

I was out and about yesterday and didn’t spend much time in the sewing room.  I was able to take out my scraps (they are overflowing) and start cutting out the pieces I need for Scrapitude 2016 called “Scrappy Stars around the Corner”.  First clue come out in January but Charlotte released the cutting instructions some time ago.  Since I was between projects and my scraps need to be used, I started cutting the “medium to dark” fabrics.  They’re easiest to pull out from the scrap bins.  I’m about halfway through.  Hopefully I’ll get all the needed pieces cut before the first clue.  It all comes together so much easier when everything is cut beforehand.

I’m still uncertain as to whether or not to do Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery QAL this year.  I do not want to buy fabric so I will need to use my stash.  I’m going to start with my scrap bins first and then move over to yardage if I need to.  I like the color selection so I’ll play along for now.  The best thing about the QAL is the community that comes together for it.  I love being able to see everyone’s progress and sharing my own.  I still need to create a project page for this.

This past week, I’ve been working on the borders for Hampton Ridge.  The previous posts this week goes into the hurdles and challenges of border #2 but here’s the last picture of it before I packed it away.  It’s not a great one but it’s what I’ve got!  There is a third and a fourth border left and I may start working on the fourth border’s HSTs (350 of them) as leaders/enders of the other projects I’ll be working on in the next 4 weeks.

Woohoo!  Now I’m ready to put this aside for a month while I work on something else this week.

But first – an update on Raining Cats and Dogs.

I haven’t done anything since last week.  I only work on this project over the weekend and I was out yesterday.  I plan to get more of the stem appliqued down today.

IMG_8547

Today here’s my plan of action:

  • Get Bonnie’s upcoming mystery QAL’s project page up
  • work a bit on Raining Cats and Dogs
  • Finish the practice quilt on Bailey and get Tell It To The Stars on it.

I’ve already packed up Hampton Ridge and the next project is Celtic Solstice.  Remember Celtic Solstice?  I was getting so bored with it last month?  I’m still not excited to work on it but I’m heading into the home stretch and I’m making more of these blocks:

Don’t mind the horrible picture.  I’ll get a better one once that final side is on.  I didn’t think I’d make it this week but I got 3 side of border #2 on Hampton Ridge.  As I said in a yesterday’s post, I decided after I started cutting to stay within certain parameters of the design.  As a result, I didn’t have enough for all 4 sides of border #2.  I will be heading the LQS at some point to look for more of this fabric so that when I get to this project again (a month from now) I have the fabric to finish this final side.  I’m a little at a loss as I’m not sure what to do now.  I do not have enough time to break out one of the quilt tops and get them on the frame but I want to be doing something.  I plan to get Scrapitude onto Bailey on Sunday since I have all day to play with that.  But today, I’ll get a bit more done on Raining Cats and Dogs but I’m not sure what I’ll do next.  We’ve got a whole day planned.  We have a wedding to attend, a festival in LA, and a Clipper game versus the Rockets!  That should be a great game!  I’ll be taking pictures so be sure to follow me on instagram @ThousandNeedles.

TGIF, 11/6/2015

Here’s an update on my progress on getting the borders on for Hampton Ridge.  I’m working on Border #2!

IMG_8596Step #1 – Cut the fabric.  Like I did with border #1, I cut the border parallel to the selvage to minimize waviness.  The first two I cut I wasn’t paying attention to the print and it wasn’t until the third strip that I wanted the border to be above.  I had enough fabric to do a total of three strips with that exact cut.  I need four strips.  So, I’ve got a trip to the LQS to do.  I do not know if I’ll have time to do three of the four sides before the week is done so I’ll plan to have the fabric in time for my next round with Hampton Ridge.

IMG_8597

Step #2 – Press the center of the top of the first side I will piece the first border on.  Normally I do a finger press.  But I was having a hard time matching the center of the border with the center of the top that I ended up pressing it with an iron.

IMG_8598

Step #3 – Press the center of the border.  For the top, notice I pressed the like sides together and for the border I pressed the wrong sides together.  This way when I match them up, they will be like sides together and the press is in the same direction.  If I forget to do this, it’s okay but I find it’s easier to match up when it is like this.

IMG_8599

Step #4 – Pin the centers together and pin the whole border.

IMG_8601

Step #5 – sew!

IMG_8602

Step #6 – Press it out.  For mitered borders, you want there to be excess fabric hanging off both ends of the top.  Those will be matched up with the other borders once you’ve got all 4 sides done.

Step #7 – repeat for all 4 side.  Once all 4 sides are done, it’s time to miter!

I haven’t had much time to do anything else this week. I am happy with the bit I was able to get done.  This weekend I plan to applique more of the stem on Raining Cats and Dogs, get the 2 other sides of border #2 on Hampton Ridge, finish my practice quilting on Bailey and load Tell It To The Stars onto the frame.

WIP Wednesday – 11/4/2015

Happy Wednesday!

I’m working on getting the borders on Hampton Ridge and here’s where I’m at currently:

Hampton Ridge Border #1 11/3/2015

Hampton Ridge
Border #1

Border #1 is on!  If you caught my post on Monday I asked if you combined strips straight across or diagonally.  It’s amazing how different techniques accomplish the same thing.  I chose to combine my strips diagonally as that is what I’ve always done and didn’t see any reason to change now.  Once my strips were combined into 1 long strip, I pinned it to the first side.

Hampton Ridge Border #1 Pinning the borders! 11/3/2015

Pinning the borders!

Pinning is very important.  It helps keep everything straight.  It helps keep everything feeding into the machine at the same consistency.  I didn’t always do this.  Learning new techniques is a constant thing for me and I’m always on the look out for ways to do something better or more efficient.  🙂

cut my finger while trimming dog ears. :( 11/3/2015

🙁

And in the process of pinning I was also trimming dog ears.  I caught my finger at the same time!  🙁  My learning lesson to go slowly even when I want to snip snip snip quickly!

Pressing is so important! 11/3/2015

Pressing is so important!

I press before I trim, before I pin and after I piece the border on!

Now on to Border #2!

Monday Madness – 11/2/2015

I was able to get a little bit of that stem appliqued down on Raining Cats and Dogs.  But it doesn’t look much different from yesterday so I didn’t bother taking a picture.

I put away Missing Ivy but before I did I put Block A and Block B together on my design floor so we can see how it’s looking so far.

I am loving how it’s coming together.  I haven’t looked at the next steps but it probably has to do with the half triangles and then the borders.  At the rate this is going, I may be able to get this completed (quilted and bound) early next year.  I can keep my fingers crossed. 🙂

I practiced a little bit on Bailey and I’m getting comfortable with it.  But nowhere near confident.  That may take some time so after this practice quilt is done, I’ll put Scrapitude on the frame and just go with it.  These are my first few attempts so I’m just going to have jump in and tackle it head on. 🙂 No one is expecting perfection!

And finally, this week’s project is Hampton Ridge.  Yup, I decided that the backing for Moon Glow can wait another day.  I would rather get closer to a finished top with Hampton Ridge.  I pulled out the final packet and took out all the luxurious fabric and read through the instructions.  There are 4 borders to attach.  Borders #1, 2, and 3 are fairly easy in that they are just one border fabric.  Border #1 and #3 are the same fabric.  Border #2 is a different fabric and is slightly more complicated in that they will be mitered.  Border #4 is a lot more complicated in that it involves 350 HSTs. 🙁  boo.  What makes it worse is that the instructions indicate that I should be using “Star Single” Triangle paper and they were not included in my packet. 🙁   The BOM included it throughout the program and suddenly for the final packet, it was not included.  I’m kind of irritated.  I tried to contact the quilt shop via their website but I’m not sure it worked.  I’ll wait a week and then I’ll call.  The good news is that it isn’t necessary until Border #4 and I’ll probably spend the rest of this week working on the borders before hand.  Here’s the thing, I’m pretty organized about this kind of stuff.  I keep all the pattern pages in a binder along with the templates they provided and all the Triangle Papers they provided previously (I still have all the extras that I had received).  None of them are the 2″ kind.  All the fabric and packets and even the inner top were packed together in a project bin.  So, I’m pretty confident that I didn’t misplace it or lose it.  However, I will concede that I did move over the summer and things happen so, there’s a chance it could have been misplaced or lost.  If I have to, I can go buy these things.  But I’m going to wait and see what the quilt shop says first.

Once I mentally moved passed that (because of course I had to pull everything out and look), I started to work on Border #1.  It will consist of 272″ of 1 3/4″ strips all around the inner top.  First, I pressed the fabric.  Then I cut my 1-3/4″ strip.  I usually cut my borders from from parallel to the selvage and I cut a pair at once.  I read, heard, was taught this somewhere from someone.  I do not know if this is the normal way quilters do it or if it was a quirk I picked up along the way.  I figure I’ll share with you in case you didn’t know this.  But the selvage or lengthwise grain (per the image) has the least amount of give.  So if you use that for borders, your border shouldn’t be wavy.

fabric_grain_drawing

Anyway, I was in the process of putting my strips together when a thought came to my head.  I was at a guild meeting and one of the ladies was showing us how to do the quarter inch border.  Anyway, she said to piece them together straight, like this:

straight pieced (it's not really pieced but just pinned together)

straight pieced
(it’s not really pieced but just pinned together for example purposes only)

But I usually piece them the same way I piece my binding strips together, which is drawing a diagonal line:

IMG_8569-0

sewing on the line, cut that little triangle on the upper right side of the line (leaving a quarter inch from the sewed line, of course) and then opening it up:

IMG_8570-0

I believe it isn’t done this way on a quarter inch border because it would be too bulky.  But it made me think that maybe I’ve been doing it wrong for my borders all this time.  Maybe this is only supposed to be done this way for binding as that diagonal line gets lost in the binding.  Maybe the proper way is to do the straight line.  Of course, no one notices and probably doesn’t care.  But I wondered so I wanted to know how you do it.  Please comment and let me know.  Thanks!

I’m looking forward to a great week!
